At last a place I can come out of the closet in.

I've got a DR350 and it's as dirty as my Africa Twin.

Tell me about your DR, Yen. I'm in the process of wearing down the boss, thinking of "investing" in an old DR to supplement the AT.

Any advice?

Cheers

I've just received authorisation to buy 2 bikes.
Just deciding.... a Varadero for the long trips or an XR400 for more of the off-road stuff. Hmmm.

-SimonYES, never buy a kickstart version unless you're very fit and never fall off the thing. Oh and first thing to do is take the calipers off and grease the sliding pins with brake grease or coppaslip before they get muddy and immersed in water. Other than that just fill it with fuel, grease the supsension nipples, replace the wheel bearings every so often and change the oil occasionally.

No, I don't think so, well not in the short term anyway.

I suspect you'll find this out the first time you have to pick that tank up off the ground. :D

Believe it or not, those ugly boxer things are actually easier to get back up off the ground.

With the udders sticking out of the side the way they do it actually rolls over the cylinder instead of having to dead-lift the whole bike at once.

(And valve covers are a lot cheaper than AT-plastic )

But you can ride with broken plastics but I suspect not with broken valve covers.

True.
That's why I've got a stick of silly putty (epoxy stuff) under the seat.

(Besides, those valve covers aren't made of glass, they can take some abuse. Though I'm still after a couple of the old square ones for the 2-valve boxer, they can take a lot more abuse than the round ones I've got now)

It's not just picking up the Panzer it's keeping it off the ground that's the problem

A couple of times at the Stella I would have dropped the Tiger if not for my sturdy motocross boots and the fact it's lighter and more manageable than the Panzer,,, and the Vara for that matter! :D (ask redmarcus about him and Roger's "off")

A very worthy bike I'm sure but I couldn't keep it up once it started to go, nor the Vara I fear! As mentioned, I caught the Tiger a couple of times, front wheel going walkabout in corners, managed to save it.

I'm sure we'd all like to have a bike for all occasions but it's a case of what you can afford. Also the dual purpose uses that intreague me. Take the Stella as an example, the Panzer, Varadero, TA, @T and Tiger, all excellent bikes to cover Europe and also to take part in the craziest mountain climb in the world! All managed admirably. No way could I have done that on an XR or a Blackbird. Neither bike would have done what the Tiger achieved. Before anyone contradicts, I'm not crazy/rich enough to wreck a Blackbird on the mountain and no XR would have carried my load in excess of 100mph or in comfort.

To me it's all about finding the right bike for the job, I've a shed full of bikes but can't find time to ride them all! The @T was "that bike", they've now been made redundant unfortunately and I've progressed through the Vara to the Tiger. Next year? Stella? Possibly! With what? Well, modified Tiger looks favourite! Needs more protection in case of an "off"!

Opinions are like ass holes, everyone's got one! This is just mine!

DR600 current dark side & 600s Bandit oh and to old bsas

DR kickstart only.. not for the faint hearted and a hoot.... it has a wunoff big bore exhaust and a red line can and is so loud and lifts the front straight of the throttle..

Its a big DR and with the 21lt tank will tour fine.. ( dr350 used on mondo enduro) saying that, I have had it out on one 2hr in the saddle, high speed road ride and its a real nut nummer

It would get me to the stella and back but not in any comfort or speed.. the TA did that the AT is a slightly bigger brother than the TA.. good but dated .. just needs a 1k motor.. 50mm folks.. 2006 make over.. but Honda have not seen fit to do that yet!!! so looking else where ( keeping the TA ).. Tiggers are good but too tall for me and I like the v twin so watch this space...

Raymo, were the Tigers seats set high? Mine is at the low setting and I reckon it's about the same height as a TA? I get both feet almost flat on the ground and I've a 30" leg.
But you're convinced the twins are the way forward so no point in trying to convince you
I love my Tigger, bloody good bike, build quality excellent, good on fuel and a note to die for!
Admittedly, the Vara is the better tourer but offroad the Tigger wins hands down. It's finding that balance that suits you best. I love twins but I do like multi cylinders as well, the Tigger for me is a nice blend. Just my opinion though.

Hi Jim
the tiggers are very good and I too like the note.. followed a few on the Stella mission ( u got the offroad can fitted? that sounds really good), some good deals going on them too.

tried the lowest setting on the demo at ****elaws.. tad too high I like to be able to at least flat foot on one side and dab the other CoG high on the tigger for me though could custom the seat

Looking at the capo but never say never  will ride any thing

there are alot of folk movin over to tiggers and the 1050 next year will be some bike

pm me if you want to attack a bacon roll at the firestation cafe in tomintoul one Sunday.. bit busy next weekend... daughters wedding .. suppose I need to be there.... 8)

Hi Raymo,

Sounds like a plan to me!

I haven't been up by Tomintoul this year yet, I was in Dufftown last weekend. I'm hoping to go to Keith show this Sunday  Missus wants to go!

Soon be time for Alford bike convention, I usually come home via The Lecht.

http://www.gtm.org.uk/whats_on.htm see 3rd Sept

I'll pm next week and we'll see what the weather's like!

Back on thread, the 955i Tiger, I love, but as you say, there's plenty out there to try. The new 1050? I will have to see it, I'm not sure but I think they've sharpened up the lines from the rounded features of the "girlie" Tiger to a similar front to a sportier sharper looking bike, also upside down forks, I'll need to see the travel on them, although the 17" wheel might put me off (offroad issue). But unlike most on the Tiger forum, I'm not rubbishing the bike without seeing it first, dunno when Shirlaws will get one in yet. Apparently, Triumph are going to run both bikes in the line up for next yr side by side. Hopefully another good yr for Triumph, good to see the factory here in the UK at full production.
