View Full Version : Question on Costs for Painting Bike

Currently the selection of panels I have will result in a somewhat bizarre colour scheme which ranges from Black,Red,Green,Silver,Blue to White. So this week I went in to the local Car Body Shop which does lots of odd things like Trikes etc.. They certainly know what they are doing and the examples of their work were impressive.
I have been quoted £250 cash - to paint all of the panels in dark blue or something similar. Materials were estimated at £100 for paint/laquer and associated treatments for painting plastics etc...Labour cost to cover stripping decals and removing laquer and decals from tank and all preparation and painting. Not going for the shell suit/parts bin graphics look - just plain colour with a couple of XRV750/Honda Logos.

Anybody got a view on the cost of this - it seems reasonable to me but I am not really in the paint/refinishing business. My current AT paint job is plain white but this only cost me in beers :D - unfortunately this special offer scheme ended when paint shop owner retired

So £250 does seem in the right ball park - I am not going to waste time getting quotes from specialist Bike painters as I suspect it will be a lot more and all the hassle of packing and shipping stuff around.
Thanks Chad - what colour did you use on Moby?

Absolute bargain, I was quoted £200 to paint my Blade petrol tank! One colour on bottom half (small dink in the corner) then whole tank with laquer. Refinishing is an expensive business.

the origional Ford 'st' blue was Vista Blue in a Metallic Clearcoat (colour code G9/M7147A) as nicked of the Mustang and GT40. but some used 'sonic blue' or 'dark blue pearl' but then if you go by the UK 'st' colours as nicked off the cosworth then your after 'imperial blue' ... which is actually nicked from the MK2 Porsche 911 GT being 'sea blue' or the more go faster 'performance blue' as we used at Msport

Paint costs vary depending on what type of paint and how its applied, if you can your after 2-pac with a clear coat laquer, all plastics MUST be plactic primered if you want it to stay on more than two days and although it sounds obvious the paint must be baked not air dried!

£250 if its done properly with 2-pac, for all your plastics, fairing and tank is a good price indeed. with the blue though i would suggest you ask if all the pannels can be white base coated first in diamond white as it makes a hell of a difference in the sun lite to the luminence of the colour. :sunny: :thumbleft:

Ive just recently got all my fairings and tank repainted. cost £400.00
Mostly because they airbrush painted the tank detail ( which you can not buy from Honda) they only supply replacement decals for the fairings.

Top info from Jenna!

Many thanks that is just the sort of technical detail I needed - The paint shop did mention all the different hardeners and plastisers that would be needed. So it looks like they were giving me a fair price for a cash job!

Thanks Everybody!

Seems like you've found a good contact for painting your panels. Could you share the info of who and where this is, as I am in the New Forest and am looking for someone to spruce up some of my panels.
Cheers

Pugh, if you follow Jenna's advice you won't go far wrong, especially about getting the right base colour.
If you do use decals get the shop to blow over a coat of clear once they're on to seal them in.
