Engine Bars

Just thought I'd share my thoughts of the Hepco and Becker Engine bars I have on my R1150 GS.
They wrap around well and appear to provide comprehensive protection. I've never had to used them in anger though, but a mate has and came off and went down the road on some black ice. He reckoned they were only scratched and all plastics, cylinder heads and other expensive stuff had been saved. So good design.

The real problem for me is when you come to servicing, basically you need to take them off or loosen them significantly each time and it's a real PITA. It certainly stops easy access to most of the engine. And with the mileage I do I seem to end up servicing the bike most of the time so I have considered taking them off and leaving them off at the next service!

The Touratech design does seem to be better, anyone with any comments on that design?

I've got a set of these fitted, but not yet had to service my bike so not had to take them off yet.

Jonathan fitted them and the most disconcerting bit was in the instructions you have to remove a bolt either side of the bike. What it doesn't say is that if you remove them both at the same time, the engine will drop out:)

The only thing I find with them is, depending on how I sit on the bike my right shin rests on the bars, and there's not much room for putting your foot down next to the bike, you have to stick it out more.

Haven't tried to see if they actually "work" yet, but I'm sure that will come in time.:D

i had the BMW bars opn marmite and they gave good protection ,,but you could stil service the bike without taking them off:thumbup:
