Is there any way that something can be set up to let us instatly notify another member that we are logged on, as if you send someone a PM they don't notice it unless they make a note of checking. I know that with my comupter once i go into the site i get a msg coming up if i have new PM's. I'm sure you know what i mean.

Simon, moved this to comments and suggestions.
Not quite sure what you mean, do you want notification of a PM or notification that a member has signed in?
The notification of a PM is down to the user options
ok, didn't know that. I'm meaning a way to "ping" someone, like there now, Phoenix and Weebro were logged on and i PM'ed them, as i've done with others in the past, but unless you have your settings right you need to look up to see if that wee number beside "unread" has changed or not. They are now logged off and didn't reply.
And before anyone says it, its not that they didn't want to talk to me. Well i hope not anyway!

your talking like an instant chat kind of system then?
i suppose, yes, but not the chat that is currently in use as i can't get it to work on my computer, either here in work or at home! And i woud think that most people don't check it. I suppose an instant msg service, which is what we use in work, you can see whos on and contact them.

i think you mean something like facebook. where there is a little tab at the bottom of the page where you can have a chat to other online friends
Open the quick links list and select open buddy list.
It's not great but it goes some way to what you want.
The problem is that the pop-up window then gets hidden, and your friends would also need to get in the habit of using it.
We have talked about an integrated chat solution but it gets to be very power hungry and may slow the forum down. Haven't ruled it out just yet though as I do like the idea if we can make it work. The technology is ever moving on though and I think we'll be able to do just what you want in the not too distant future.
