hi there guys. i'm new to this dual sport, big traily thing so i've joined up to learn and ask for advice on buying a transalp.
not new to bikes (they are my life) but i've always been into road bikes or enduro bikes. the big trail bike side of life is something i've not been into, but i'm now looking for a cheap transalp to do some tours into wales and amybe europe.
been looking on ebay and motorcyclenews and the are some deals to be had. there is one with 50k miles on it for good money - is that too many miles for a transalp? what sort of milage can you expect from an engine?
are any modles better than others or maybe ones to avoid?
dam i wish i could edit that thread heading!

Welcome to the site. transalps seem to go on and on so as long as it looks and runs ok I would think it will last.

Hi Redbikejohn, welcome to the forum. The transalp is a fantastic bike and I have done 35,000 miles on mine, when I mentioned high mileage I got laughed at and told that it's only just run in at that

Anyway, welcome to the site, have a little browse around the Transalp section (http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=35) you'll get some excellent advice about the bikes in there

When you get your bike check out the meetings section (http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=40) for details of planned rides and if there is nothing there then post one up and see who is about.

We are a friendly bunch here and we have a great Chatter (http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=41) section for any old rubbish and chat, sometimes bike related more often just a vague link

After you have been here a while you may want to think about subscribing as well, fairly soon some of the functions that you currently have will no longer be available without subscription, it's just a way for us to be able to improve the site and add extra functions. If you look at the top of the page you will see the subscribe button. If it's not something you want to do that's fine too, you will still be able to post and read the posts that are here so don't go anywhere.

If there is anything you want to ask or if you have any problems then post in the problems with the forum section (http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=46)there are lots of helpful moderators and admins around that will help

Have fun, let me know what you want your title to be and I can change it for you

Welcome redbikejohn, the advice I got a few months back when I was looking was not to be afraid of the higher mileage ones, as long as they've had a reasonable history these hondas will just keep going, there certainly seems to be a few higher mileage examples on here :thumb:

Hi RBJ, good to see you over here!
I've always enjoyed your CHEC and Enduroland reports/photos, the odd 1 or 2 even have me in! (Can't seem to register with the TBM forum, hence not saying "hi" before!)

I've had a 650 Transalp (and still got most of the bits to build one in the garage, must get round to it sometime!), pretty bombproof bikes, better in the dirt than one would expect, even managed not to come last at a CHEC at Billington! It may be worth looking for 1 with engine bars/improved sumpguard, as these are things that should be factory fitted!! There's a suprisingly good choice of tyres about given the 17" rear, and you can play with the gearing too. You seem to get more bike for your money with an Alp rather than an Africa, Alps are a lot less "sexy", slightly worse on the suspension front but no worse in ground clearance.

:D.
