............ just my way of doing it..........

Here's my PC power supply fan fitted to my Reg/Rec unit.

http://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/data/500/medium/Bike_Aug_08_001.jpg

It was a tight squeeze in the end as the fan was hitting the side panel - I had to make a bracket to move the unit higher up to stop it, but it works fine I just need to add some form of protection underneath as its still a bit exposed to spray from the back wheel.

Plus I may need to add some holes or a mesh filled cut-out to the side panel as there's not much room between it and the fan so although its pushing air fine, it might just help it out a bit..........

Spooky - did you fix that, Lutin, or me?

Well, I trooped over to the member gallery to have a look at the photos with a view to trying to help sort the problem out. Then I wandered back to your post and, viola, the piccy was there.

Beats me. But hey, the job's done.

Nice tidy piece of work by the way.

Cheers, I was bored and wiring in the elecric fans on the discovery (from a Pug 407), although a similar job, didnt flick my switch as I'm gonna have to re-make most of the loom, so this little job filled some time in for me today whilst waiting for mini-stageone to come home from school............

One minor nitpick: ;-)

You sure it doesn't blow away from the heatsink? All the computer fans I've seen blow towards the side with the connecting spokes that's visible in the pic...

I don't think that it matters. It is the flow of air that is important.

I looked at that - the back of the unit (the side nearest the frame) is the resin filled area - the finned casing (effectively the heat-sink) sits outermost and the fan is blowing, more like sucking really, air away from it - taking the heat with it. If it was to blow the other way it would be blowing hot air back onto the heat-sink so wouldnt be as effective?

Like Lutin says, the main thing is that there is now a positive flow of air around the unit which will help take any heat away, or thats the theory anyway............

CPU manufacturers seem to think otherwise, as they're all blowing onto the heatsink.

That said, anything's better than having no fan at all. :-)

Mmmmmmmm thing is - the fan is fitted the same way it was fitted when it was inside the PC so why would the power supply fan blow out and the CPU fan blow in? Odd and another reason why computers are not to be trusted!

Because case fans (and power supply fans as they're usually mounted in the top of the case) suck the heat out of an enclosure, while CPU fans move as much air as possible over as big a surface as possible (heat sink fins) to cool it down, and the latter works better when you're blowing. ;-)

Sounds good to me - I know knack all about this level of stuff - I fix tanks for a living and shout at folk...............

all the cooling fans on my electric counter balances blow cold air on to the heat sinks not suck, as a blast can be directed and a sucking air can not:thumbup:

This is one area that seems to cause confusion.
The fans in the case can suck air in from the bottom of the case, the CPU fan directs the cool air onto the heat sink to remove the heat which rises the case fans at the rear and the power supply fans blow the hot air out the back off the case.
My thermotake case had 7 fans plus the cpu fans and the power supply fans.
2 fans sucking air in the front over the hard drives.
2 fans sucking air in over the cpu's
2 fans one each per cpu blowing the air over the heat sink.
2 fans at the rear blowing heat out the back.
1 fan on the top to blow the heat out
1 fan on the video card and
3 fans on the power supply to help remove the heat and keep the power supply cool.

Confusion about blow or suck ....... where is this thread likely to be going now, I wonder?:D
