OK, who wants to go off road at the National. The local TRF have volunteered to lead us on a couple of rides.

At least one will be suitable for absolute beginners. There may also be bits where those on nice little single cylinder machines can disappear off into the mud while the rest ride round to meet them.

The TRF really know the local lanes and know which you can get down on a GS and which you can't, so it should make for a great ride.

If you are itnerested, let me know the bike you'll be on, how knobbley your tyres are and whether you are a novice, have a little experience or are a mud god (my wife was once in a band called the Mud Gods).

Yes, please Chris!!

TKC's on me KTM Adventure and a little experience.

Judging by the weather here now it's going to be a quagmire, mud to your axles, seriously slimy. And that's just the campground!!

Thanks for sorting this out :thumbright:

i'm there, brand new tkc on the rear, not a mud god mearly a mushroom slowly growing in the shadows of he who is named mudwiz..........

that translates to just about average in the thick stuff not bad on the normal stuff and gives it some in the gravelly stuff.

Big thanks to Seawolf, who is not allowed to come to the National unless we arrange to kidnap him from a wedding he has to attend. Seawolf put me in touch with the local TRF and, rather than just give me details of routes have said they will lead.

We can have upto a dozen of us. They may split us into two groups but we'll see. I spoke to a really nice bloke who is sorting it for us.

The local council were remarkably helpful too. Here's their response to a couple of emails:

Thank you for your email. I have asked Dartmoor National Park to
respond
to you direct . Regarding the interactive map - byways open to all
traffic are shown in a red line .
The best map to use is the OS Explorer Map which shows unsurfaced
county
roads in a green notation - these are legally available for wheeled
vehicles but are usually un surfaced and we recommend that voluntary
restraint is used in extreme weather.

Public Rights of Way - Environment, Economy and Culture Directorate

Thanks - please note green dots on explorer maps for unsurfaced county
roads - red lines on our interactive map
for byways open to all traffic. The Trail riders fellowship also have
some good routes already mapped into circuits and you may like to
contact them http://www.trfdevon.org.uk/

I think I'd better get my on road skills a bit better first :D

Yes please. I'll be on an R1150GS. Brand, spanking new TKC80's front and back. Done a little offroad but only on gravelly fire trails.

Hopefully me too!

Bike - XR650R, but on road tyres (Metz. Lasertecs). Unless, of course, you folks tempt me into the worn out Metz 6 Days front and pretty goos Mich AC10 rear. I've also got new AC10s for front and back, if we're hooning, but that might need a trailer down, and I'm not into that.

Rider - low grade "Sportsman", but keen and willing to push/drag/lift.

:D.

Assuming I have the chance to change my current TKC "slick" rear before the "Nat", I'm definitely up for getting my bike a bit muddy!

Stick my name on the list please. What day/s are the off-road likely to be, as I'm not sure what day I'll be arriving yet (depends on work)

Cheers

Saturday will be the off-road day.

There will be two groups with about six in each. We'll head off in different directions and meet up at lunchtime. There will be a pub or cafe for lunch, so no need to carry a packed lunch. But bring something to drink.

Each group will have to ride about 15 miles out of the National Park before hitting any lanes. Lanes in the area are stony rather than muddy and there is a lot of slate (making the TKCs a bit slippery, apparently).

But it will all be manageable by relative novices.

The local TRF has arranged for at least two ride leader and possibly last man standing (sweeper) for each rideout. Top bloke Seawolf put me on touch with.

So a few more spaces still available. Saturday's weather is looking like being the best day too.:D

:happy8: Thats my world!!

In other words, oh crap, AC10s are really poor on rocky/slatey tracks. Trials tyres or T63s are where it's at then.

Pete, just tip up and sort the camping when you're there. On the trail we'll all work together, no one gets left behind.
All good fun. :p.

At the risk of making a fool of myself, is there something open to me,
I'll be on a 700 alp with standard tyers but I do like a bit of fun off the tarmac ( admittably on trials bikes) but I do need my bike to get me home aftarward,

Pete and Stuart, see you there. It can all be sorted out on the day. I'll be the one with the round, fat red face an short hair, unless Austin is there, in which case, that'll be both of us. I'm the one on the zebra.
