Hi All,
I recently bought a XL 600 LM, it's in resonably nick and I have everything for it, however the guy I bought it off had a go at rewiring it and has totally butchered it, I've been able to get a new wiring loom for it, but am having problems in working out the ignition switch. It currently has 3 wires coming out of it, none of which match up with what my wiring diagram say they should be, Was wondering if any of you have any experience of re wiring an xl and if so if you could point me in the right direction.
Please help because I can't wait to ride it.
Thanks
Dave

Dave - just realised you're not a subscribed member - might be worth doing as it's a tenner well spent for all the help, advice, and general madness you'll find on here.
Also - you'll then be able to PM me your number so that we can sort out your wiring - it can't be anywhere near as much grief as I had with Mel's LM :D:D:D - when he says he cut it all off - he wasn't joking :D:D:D

Well at least he's not philandering around your LM any more :blob7:
By the way - can I take up your kind offer of advertising in your sig line.......?
I thought that this site (http://barbie.everythinggirl.com/) might like the extra visibility and would send you some freebies ............ :sign5: :sign5: :sign5:

Sorry - didn't take any photos - but Mel's LM has had a custom front loom and dash installed so it probably wouldn't make much sense anyway.
What colour wires have you got from which terminals on your ignition barrel - if it's an original barrel you should have the following:
Ignition 2 - Black
Battery - Red
Earth - Green
Ignition 1 - Black / White

Thanks, thats great info, so it would look life it has been tampered with at some stage which I thought was the case. I've only got 3 wires coming out of it. I've got a red one, a blue one and a blue and orange (I did say it had been butchered) All of them are soldered on to the right hand side terminals with the red one being on the top right hand side and the other two are soldered to the the two terminals below. Does that make any sense to you? I'll try and post some photos on here if that possible so you can acutually see what is going on with it.
Thanks

Def sounds like someone's been changing the wires around, if it is still the right switch for the bike. My LM-f has a 4 wire system.
With the switch in the off pos the black/white and green wire should be closed curcuit, red and black open.
Switch on, the red and black should be closed curcuit, black/white and green open.
If you can find which should be red and black, it may be that the last wire is operating with the lock body as earth. (green).
p.s. my pic is a photocopy and crap.

How do I attach some photos on to here?
I'm fairly certain that you needed to be a subscribed member to avail yourself of the Picture Gallery and create yourself a personal photo album.
Go one, it's only a tenner.......:D
Or as Mrs Doyle from Father Ted would have it "Go on, go on, go on.".

Thanks for the help so far. It's very much appreciated.
Right then I've tested the ignition switch and it is not doing what you say it should be doing. When the key is in the off postion there is no power going through any combination of wire, and when the key is in the on position there is power going through every combination. So I'm more than a little confused.
Please help me my head is starting to hurt!!!!!

Could you just confrim something for me because this is slighlty contirdicting itself, on this you say that IG 1 and IG2 are both black/ white and on the attached wiring diagram it says that IG 1 is black/ white and IG 2 is Black. Was wondering if you could confirm which is correct. But thanks for the wiring diagram by the way it's so much better than the one I had. :)

My pic is the same as the one Stormforce8 posted yet my switch has IG2 as black only.
With the switch in the off position there won't/shouldn't be power on IG1 or E but they will be closed curcuit. (Joined). The switch shorts IG1 to earth to cut the engine.
Hope this helps.

Is it possible that my IG 1 and IG 2 wires have been joined together with the other two wires being the main power in and the other being the earth. However if this was the case would the earth still have power running through it when the bike was turned on?
As you may have guessed my bike electrics knowledge isn't that great.
Thanks again

I'd say anythings possible. Could be the wrong switch for the bike or someone's soldered on different wires.
What colour wires have you got on the bike to the switch?
As you've already got a diff loom, why no get another lock, should sort all the probs.

At the moment I've got three wires coming out. A red one coming out of the top right hand side terminal and a red/black out of the bottom right hand side and a blue/orange next to that one. Some one has definately been messing with it. As you say I think buyin a new ignition is the way to go. Found a place in southampton that will do a new switch and keys for £26 so think that is probably the way to go.
Been round it with an electrical tester and all the other switches seem to be working as they should. So it's just this one that is the pain in the ass.

Wemoto (http://shop.wemoto.com/pictures.dyn?u=25301qqq25645) do a direct replacement for your XL600LM ignition switch for £29.93 - will plug straight into your existing loom :thumbright:
http://shop.wemoto.com/pictures/hl/b38c8.jpg
As you can see from the picture - clearly identifies the Black/White, Red, Green, and Black wires.
Just noticed that my original drawing shows 2 Black & White wires - the one on the left (IG2) should be BLACK ONLY not Black / White - sorry for any confusion.

Thanks for all the help so far decided to buy a new ignition, I know it's cheating really but what the hell. Got it fitted and tested tonight, and there seems to be power going to all the right places so gonna fill it with oil and a bit of fuel and have a go at pushing the button tomorrow, so fingers crossed! Will let you know how I get on.
Also noticed tonight that none of the lights seem to be working, so will be back with lots more questions soon.:thumbright:

It looks like it ain't producing a spark now as well althou there does seem to power going everywhere so hopefully it's just a dodgy plug. Was wondering if anyone knew how to get the plug out coz I can't get my plug spanner in to the gap coz the frame is in the way. Is there some sort of special spanner to fit it???
I use one of these (I don't know the English word):
http://home.kabelfoon.nl/%7Ekoenders/Clips/pijpsleutel.gif
Mine is sawed off so it fits below the frame tube. It's also possible to weld a socket into it so that it can be used with a ratchet.

Thanks for the help so far. This is a great site. The problems just keep coming. It appears that I did have a spark after all it was just my emergency stop switch was wired the wrong way round.
My next issue is trying to work out where the fuel pipe goes into the carb, as my manual is not too clear in showing where the fuel pipe goes. I've got three possible places where it could go. I've got 2 on the left hand side and 1 on the right handside. The right handside has a piece of pipe on it all ready which makes me think this is the one. Where the one on the right goes in there seems to be a pipe that connects the both together. However the manual says that the fuel should go in to one of the left hand side nozzels.
Was wondering if anyone could help.

Thanks for the pic, Have also spoken to the previous owner who has confirmed it for me. The issues are by no means stopping there tho. and I'd be disappointed if they did. Despite the advice off you guys I can still not get the fecking plug out. I've tried shouting at it and that doesn't work either!!!! So have left it for now and will be back on it when my patience returns, and my blood pressure goes down!!!
The next issue I have found is that all of the lights are still not working, Had the switch off the bike last night stripped it, cleaned it and tested it. All was going well until I put it back on the bike when it went back to doing what it was doing before. so went back to the method of shouting at it. Once again that didn't work either but made me feel better! Tested it again in situ and there seems to be power jumping across when you turn the lights on to dipped beam. Hopefully there is just something touching inside the switch. So think I will have another go at it tonight, and see what weird things it starts doing tonight. But hey still love it and can't wait to ride it.
