Have you ever gone to the dealer and he has copped a look at your 20 000 miles speedo on your part ex gaggled like a 2 year old in a chocolate factory only to tell you its half way through its life?
Im curious to know what milages people have got out of bikes before they have gone pop?
I have been seeing 70.000 and 100.000 referances throughout the site?
Is this on the origional motor? Can the the xrv finally fill the gap of a reliable high milage motor?
Be interesting to me at least so post your highest milage ever done on any machine and cooties to the dealers!

I've got pretty low mileage on my '96 transalp, 90,000 Km - 56,000 miles :D

When i was looking for a transalp, dealers here were willing to charge me 5000 euro for similar year and mileage - so they weren't exactly trying to tell me the bike was end of life! thankfully i found a private seller who was asking a resonable price!

I blame the UK bike press for promoting this idea the 40,000 miles is the end of life for a bike - they all promote screwing the yabs off highly tuned bikes and as a result they get terrible mileage.. also, they're so fickle that a 3 year old bike is so passé that they need to justify getting a brand spanking new power ranger accessory. Of course some dealers are willing to tell you all that 'cos they want to sell you a new bike. But it shouldn't be too bad if you're in the market for a second hand bike! I was willing to import a bike form the UK when i was looking for one, because even after the price of the ferries and re-registering the bike etc... it was well cheaper than buying from an Irish dealer.

My AT's just clocked 40,000 miles. Looks OK, rides OK. 8)

Mines now on 107,000 miles. Original engine, only work done internally was to file the grooves out of the clutch basket at 70,000. I put new clutchplates in because I had already ordered them but the old ones were measured and found to be within service limits, springs are still original and were also well within service limits. I'm still waiting for the gearbox to get better.

I average 49/50 mpg at 80mph all the way to work on dual carriageways and motorway. I top up the oil about every 200 miles (goes down about 2-3 mm on the dipstick) as it does use the stuff, but to be fair it's done that from new and it doesn't smoke at all. Oil has been changed every 5,000 miles, mostly using Castrol GPS from Halfords.

Now if only the electrics were up to the same mileages with no problems.

Anyone want to buy a low mileage AT, only 7,000 miles on the clock.

I am sure you will enjoy every single mile you ride on your AT. I have done 105000miles on two ATs and loved every minute even with a sore arse.

What are the individual milages of your machines?

Mines on 114,000 miles now, but I haven't ridden it for 2 weeks. Bloody M&P are holding me up by losing my new chain and sprockets somewhere.

Mine's reading 45,000 miles. However, I'm on engine number 2. Fell foul of an overtight chain which wrecked the countershaft bearing - stripped engine (RD04) over the course of 8 months, replaced bearing, rebuilt engine, rebuilt bike, and then it ran like a dog.

Was told that the engine was knackered, so replaced engine with newish one (RD07) - result ... ran like a dog. Turned out that there was a mystery problem with the carbs. What a waste of money.

Many lessons were learnt - there are a couple of bits on the RD07 which are different to the RD04 (pulse generator related) - engines being rebuilt should probably have many nuts and bolts replaced rather than renewed (sheared a number of head bolts when attempting rebuild #2 on RD04 engine), oh, and never buy anything from Manchester (don't ask).

Had a suzuki gsx400f once, with 115000km's on it. That was about the end of the bike, consumed more oil than petrol...

Was an old driving school bike though.. so it was beaten around a lot.

Mines done 3200miles and it's a '99.

I've only had the bike for 4 months or so.

Mine is on 20k now and can't see except for the strange result in overtight chains eating shafts that it cannot do another 80k at least.

There is a guy on ADVrider site who has done over 300k on his 96' R1100GS. The dealer offered him a couple of $$ on 100 000 miles telling him the bike is on it's last legs. He is now pushing for 500k.

All he has done is stuck with the oil service intervals and think he had to exchange the clutch once.

37,000 miles on mine. It a 2000 model and seems to be going fine (well, when I get it back after being driven into by a blind mum on a school run!)

had a 95(n reg)600 transalp from new which i covered 55,000 miles in a year and a half!!!! the only problems being the rear shock collapsed,(honda replaced under warranty, even though it was my fault! I was jumping a rail crossing at about 85 - 90 mph every night!!! heh!! :thumbright: )and it was horrendous on wheel bearings(?). I part ex'd for a new 97 africa twin (got £3000 on part ex which i thought was good) this did 179,000 miles in 7 years, was written off twice ( cat c ) and only ever broke down and left me stranded twice! the engine was never run in!!!!! i did the oil and filter every 4000 miles or every 2000 if used for short hops. again the africa twin went through bearings (wheel and headrace) like **** through a goose!!! rear shock was replaced twice and chains were replaced every 12,000 miles (even with a scotoiler) due to 2 x-ring chains snapping.best mods to both bikes? - crash bars and a k & n air filter!
