Anybody know which is the best...
To be able to say wether one unit is 'better' than another we must know what qualities you consider important in a GPS receiver. Best for one person is often worst for another.
The SP has a bigger screen than the Quest, therefore it's better? :? The Quest is handholdable for treking, therefore it's better? The SP has a higher reliability record because it's been around longer than the Quest, therefore it's better? The Quest has a silver case, therefore it's better?

All good questions. I've just ordered a quest, told the girlfriend it cost £200 instead of near £400, wonder why I did it then look at the recycling bags and it all becomes clear. GOD DAMN YOU JACOBS CREEK!
I'll let you know how good/bad it is before ebaying/marrying it.
That said, I'm still terrified walking up to the bike. It seems to get bigger every time I use it. Familiarity will, I hope, come with experience...

Well it finally turned up today - haven't had a chance to test it in anger but it came pre-loaded with the entire EU map and let me plot a trip from my rothole in Clapham to my friends in Lyon within a minute. I haven't got a bike mount for it yet but as far as I can see, it's the billy********. 20 hour battery life doesn't hurt either. The screen is a tad small, but then you should only really be checking it when you're going < 100mph, right kids? Looks like a winner to me at the moment.

Hi,
Can you keep us informed about your "quest" experiences?, thinking of buying one myself. Do or don't?
Cheers,

Hmmm?
Quest = plenty sovs or map on tank = £15.
Plus there's no excuse for asking French crumpet for directions.

I got the streetpilot 111 in the end, went for the bigger screen. Seems just the biz, just need a few more chips now.

What is the general consensus on the Garmin Streetpilt III or the V ? Im seeing these (in Black and White) going on Ebay for under £100.
I dont really want to spend a few hundred on somethign that knowing my luck will get stolen or I will loose!.
I see a few actually going to £60 ish...

How about this:
http://www.xrv.org.uk/getimage.php?id=281
It may not tell you where you are but on an overcast day it'll let you know if you're heading for UK or Timbuctoo (or London N9).
Plus it only costs £6 and it has adjustable compensators. It's also 'reversed' telling me my bike is facing NNW.
If it breaks or gets nicked - so what - it may not impress the birds but it costs less than 2 pints.

Hi,
been thinking about something like that as well.
Do you by any chance now how the metal of the bike affects proper working of the compass?
Cheers,
T.
BTW, sure does look a bit sexy. Look: this is my navigation system, baby.. 8) 8)
(edit)
Right... forgot to read about the compensator part...
Where bought?

Bought locally here. This is a maritime county in the UK and compasses are as natural as knives & forks.

Heh heh, actually it would be more useful if it took you around N9.

Streetpilot III is old technology now as is the Quest I. I've got a 2610 and a Quest I. the Quest is an excellent tool but only has a 256Mb memory. The 2610 has the ability to accept 2 Gb memory cards and you can get most of Europe on one. There were some deals around on the 2610 when it was superceded by the Zumo. Try GPS Warehouse they sometimes have refurbished ones which are as good as new. Mine was new and with a bike mount came to under £300.

Only difference I can see with Quest1 and Quest2 is the memory. just picked up a Quest1 on eBay for 70 quid and I'm delighted, perfect tool for the bike, totally waterproof and compact, fits beautifully over the dash just behind the screen. If you're on a budget the Quest1 is unbeatable, but you will find yourself uploading maps, as and when you need them. The extra memory on the Quest2 will eliminate all the faffing about with having to upload maps, but expect to pay in excess of 300 quid, even for a second hand one.
