Me and a buddy are planning a trip to Nordkap next year. I have read and enjoyed Matt Popes article and are going to take a similar route north but fancy coming back through Sweden. I would be grateful for any info and good roads heading south.

There are basically only two roads running north/south in Sweden. There's the coastal E4, which is nice enough but is used by the long distances coaches and Finnish/Russian lorries :? . Alternatively, and my recommendation, is the 'Inland Road', which is a lot smaller and winds it's way down the centre of Sweden. :D

For example, from Alta in Norway you can take the R93 south to Kautokeino and on through the tip of Finland and into Sweden on the 45/E10. At Gallivare turn off onto the Inlandvägen (45) and keep going south. There's some awesome loops to the west around Vilhemina into the mountains bordering Norway, but if you just keep going south until you reach Ostersund then take the E14 west over the mountains and back to the Norwegian fjordlands.

Have a good trip.

Iain
Thanks for the info i think we will use the inland road it sounds better than mixing it with coaches and lorries.

We are planning around june but my mate is always jetting around the world (he thinks he's a playboy) so the date may change.

I do not have addresses or tel number but there is a nice camp site at Ullapool which looks out over the loch on the edge of the town. Applecross (on the coast north of Kyle of lochalsh) has a good site and a great road/pass (Bealach nam Bo/Pass of the cattle) over the mountain. www.applecross.uk.com

Bon vacance
