View Full Version : Where to go on the wekend?
I'm new to dirt and off-road riding and I'm looking for some nice and easy roads for a start with. Can anyone recommend one near London. I'm prepared to travel up to 100 miles.
My plan is to fit my TKC 80 in the next week or so, so hopefully my bike will be able to handle a bit of mud.

Go and have a gentle ride on the Pilgrim's Way in Kent. Stick to the parts marked Byway on the OS and you should be okay.
I have found a nice series of greenlanes that start around the guildford area & finish around box hill with a few road sections in between. Its a good days riding (allowing for a few breathers). Will be out there again in the next few weeks, will give you a shout. Where abouts in London are you?
I'm in North London - an hours ride to Guilford/Box hill. Send me a PM next time you are going.
I'm also in North London (N6). another lane I want to explore further is the ridgeway. I did a small section of it (around the white horse) earlier in the winter. Apart from being wet & slippery, its easy going. Apparently quite a lot of its total length is rideable so it could be a good day / weekend trip.
Will be in touch when the weather improves a bit.
I'm in Finchley, N3. Ridgeway sounds good.
Just waiting for my TKC 80s to arrive and fit them - then I'll be ready to go out too. Shouldn't be too long.
Looks like your not far away then. I realise that this is getting a bit off subject but where did you end up getting your TKC 80's from? & how much (if you dont mind me asking)
Ordered the TKC 80s from www.busters-accessories.co.uk for £100 :compress: a pair. Still waiting to arrive though, since they have to get them from somewhere else.
See how they ride, and I'll probably order another rear one. Apparently the production of 17" ones has stopped and this are the last ones you can get.
Long weekend is coming and the weather seems promising - who will be out there this weekend exploring the dirt tracks?
Since I'll be fitting my TKC 80s on Friday, I'll be keen to go out for a short run later. I am still keen on the Ridgeway so if anybody else is going there - give me a shout. If not - please give me directions on how to get there.
Cheers :compress:
Have some MCE Karoos arriving next week. We are away for easter but will be keen to test them out as soon as they arrive. Possibly the weekend after?

At the risk of sounding like a bore, please check that the sections of the Ridgeway you ride are a) byways and b) not TROed. As the south's best known ancient trail it's been the centre of the rambler v. motorist debate recently. I believe that Wiltshire has imposed a few TROs, but as the Ridgeway is so long there's a number of councils with the power to impose TROs on their section.
Otherwise, have fun and post photos!

Iswoolley,
Wise words indeed. I tend to avoid 'playing' on major attraction spots at peak times (I'm referring to the Pilgrim's Way in Kent). Those ramblers think they own the place!!
Perhaps people who are considering the Ridgeway may want to consider Salisbury Plain - think they're pretty close, and I think the Plain is less likely to be infitrated by the RA.

The thing is - I don't know where to start. I'm a dirt track virgin and don't know where Ridgway is and what is it :albino: .
I've heard that I have to buy OS maps to get all the information I need, but which map do I buy and where from?
Is there any information on the net?

I've heard good things about the Karoos. Where did you get them from and how much?
Next weekend sounds fine. That's unless I manage to damage my bike in the next few days.
so what happened then did you go any pics :D

Hello Gibbo...
Got any info on the above? Boxhill isn't far from here and I'd be interested in the route...
Bit busy in May but fancy a jaunt at some point?
