I am about to purchase an ex Police Transalp (PSNI) and was wondering if there is anything in particular I need to be aware of when looking and test riding the bike later this week.
It is a 1999 model, came out of Police service last Autumn, has done about 22,000 miles.
As I am new to biking, this will be my first bike, any help and advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

David

I can't give any particular advice. A friend knew of two that were being removed from service last year that had been in the county Antrim area. I do know that they are generally well serviced and that according to my Honda dealer this is done in house.
I am curious as to how you get to buy one of these? Is there an auction or some sort of press release?
I have no doubt you will enjoy the bike.

With a police bike the service will be ok, they don't fool around with that. I'm not aware how the UK police ride there bikes but the dutch police bikers give the bikes a hard time now and then.

Thanks for that info

Jak
Not sure how you find them as they come out of service, This one may be one of the ones you mention and being moved on again.

I am lead to believe the, like the Dutch, the bikes are well serviced and looked after but not sure how much "abuse" they get. I have been told that generally they are well ridden and not abused !

Thanks again for the info and reassurance.

I'd say they'd be well looked after. The only problem you may have will be that there might be holes left in the fairing from all the lights and sirens and stuff.

Bet you'll be able to get a bargain!

holes left in the fairing from all the lights and sirens and stuff....and bullets ;)

I had an ex-police BMW R80 once, it was in excellent nick yet cheap. I am sure this Transalp has a good chance to be a good buy as well.

Are they taking them off  What a shame, that are practical extra's

Thanks guys - bought the bike today - It has obviously been used in all weather and has a few holes where blue lights, siren etc were but nothing that will annoy me too much.

Seems that the engine has been well looked after, as was expected with such a bike.

Will do the job as this is my 1st bike and will allow me to accompany my wife on her Hornet, albeit a mile or two behind maybe!!!!!!!

Hi truska
If you are who I think you are you live just around the road from me, I drove past you on a Blackbird the morning you left the transalp with PW for prep. If so big Hi from the AT & T world. Maybe we'll catch up for a run sometime ( have a look at the camping in Ireland thread!!) . Dont worry I left the BB back and Im on the @ again. AND if youre not who I think Hi anyway.

Hi Phoenix
All makes sense to me. I will keep my eyes out for you in the area. Normally in a LR Discovery as I only get on the bike when there are no kids or dogs to transport as well - oh and the wife is not wanting to take her Hornet out.
This is my 1st Bike (at least for many many years) so am just getting re adjusted to the 2 wheel world again.
I believe, though I have not seen it, there is another white T@ in the area as well.
Maybe catch you around the area sometime.

Does it still have the yellow reflective trims etc?

I'd say you could feel like moses parting the red sea with motorists getting out of your way thinking you're a copper :)

A friend of a friend's has an ex uk cop bike and they have great fun watching the fekkers dawdling in the overtaking lane getting the hell out of the way

No, No yellow stripes or blue lights - pitty - I have hazard lights though.
For the 1st week, until I had got my new jacket, I just wore a big yellow coat - and yes the "waters parted" but now I have changed the coat it is not as obvious.
Plan to get the bike painted though probably not for a few months yet.

Cool,

Any ideas on the colour - you going to get the Transalp stickers or just leave it unbadged?

The ex cop bike belonging to a friends friend (a Pan European) had all the stuff removed - apart from a button to strobe the headlight - which'd be pretty neat. Hazzard lights would be handy too.

(although an oil change and service wouldn't go amiss either - but i keep procastinating)

Still got the button to strobe the headlight as for colour - not sure.

Do you know where I can get Transalp decals - There are plenty of Honda onces available on e-bay and other places but I have not seen Transalp ones - although someone said Honda do them but at silly money.

Hi ya truska

I spent a bit of time hunting decals for the twin a while ago, the is a company in england who do decals for a variety of bikes , Ill see if I can dig out their number/ web site. McMordy bros in belfast do vinyl cutting to your own spec, so if you have an idea of what you want they can produce it......and yes Honda can provide replacements but are a tad costly....

Recently had to get two decals , TRANSALP and RALLY TOURING. These thankfully were supplied courtesy of Honda but the price would have been £13.99 for each one. There is a guy who does plastic decals in Ballymena. I will try to get his number but doubt unless he had an original to scan he would have a set.
