View Full Version : Fuel Pump needed for AT RD04 tank on Transalp?
Hi there,
This may be a totally stupid question to those of you who are iniated:
Have just purchased on ebay an Africa Twin RD04 fuel tank to put on my 1987 Transalp PD06. Do I require a fuel pump like the RD07s have?
My standard Transalp tank is only 18 litres and completely above the level of the carbs, so it is gravity fed. Some of the 23 (or is it 24?) litre RD04 tank must sit below the carbs?
Ta, in advance for any advice.

Any fuel in your new tank that is lower than your carb intake will be unusable unless you fit a pump. I would recommend a Mikuni vacuum pump as this will be powered from your carb balance take off (no electrics to worry about) and can be bolted on to your engine or frame in the same way as it is on an AT. Costs about £50 from Africa Queens.
Cheers for the reply. Left this msg in 1 or 2 other places. The summary is: Yes you need a pump for the juice below the level of the carbs and the Mikuni vacuum/Yamaha xtz660 will do the job. Electric Af twin pumps are dodgy.
Thanks,
Chris

I'm doing the same thing you are as we speak. I'm using the Mikuni DF-44 vacume pump, it costs $19.95 USD and works great. Just use the vacume hose that went to the stock fuel petcock on the TA for vacume.

And now... I'm also in this boat. Vacuum pump it is then :tongue5:

Yen (very wise), do you have a photo of that Africa Queens fuel pump bracket? I'd like to see how it mounts on your bike if you've got a photo to share.
To all...
Also, the AT carbs. require a certain flow rate no? Does that vacuum Mikuni DF-44 have the same specs. as the factory electric pump? How did you figure out to use the DF-44 over another model vacuum pump?
Hey... petcock (fuel valve) question. The tank I'm getting from Jeff only has one petcock (the other is missing). I need to get another one (and also two rebuild kits I'm sure). You guys have a part number for those petcocks on an RD04 tank laying around? I'm guessing there is a right and a left side, but maybe not. Maybe one faces front and the other back (same part number for both sides).
Is there another Honda bike that uses these same petcocks?
Is there another petcock that could be used on the RD04 tank? I'm not sure NOT having a res. is such a good thing. Counting on lights to remind me of low fuel isn't really a good thing either IMHO. It be nice to have a petcock that would fit the RD04 tank... that had a res. setting on it. Hey, I'd have to admit... sometimes I push the refills and res. is my only way out! :blackeye:
Also, any of you know a part number for a rebuild kit for the stock AT RD04 petcocks?
I'll need to buy a workshop manual for the RD04 AT I think. Like Jeff... I think having the rear swingarm/disc brake would be a great addition.
Anything I need to know about those fuel senders inside the tank? I'm guessing I'll wire them up to LED lights on my TA, but any other things I need to be aware of?
Hmm... that is all for now. I guess this might be best posted over on the @ side, but I thought I'd try here first.
Thank you. :flower:

All the pump does is move the fuel up to the carbs when the level in the tank drops below the carbs. The carbs control how much fuel they need. Nothing special needed. I chose the one I did because it had the right number of inlets and outlets.
