Dos anyone know a shop in London, where I can try one of them Roof helmets? Some good offers on eBay, but I need to try before I buy.

Are you sure you really want one? In Buell circles they are rather popluar for "looking cool" but apparently they are loud, pants quality and hopelessly overpriced.... which could explain why Buell owners love them so much :clown:
depends on the model you are looking at, their fliptop lid is meant to be crappy but i have heard good things about some of their other lids
I was after one of the Boxer RO5s - liked the practicality of it. From HorizonsUnlimited site I've read that flip-up helmets are good for touring, but I find them very heavy and noisy. Didn't want an open face one because it's going to be a struggle in bad weather, so the next choice was to try the Boxer.
After trying one this afternoon I don't think I'll be buying any. First of all it's too heavy - 1650g. Secondly - the fit was cr*p. The chin-bit was touching my face, and the rest of the lid was too loose. I guess these lids are not made for falling face down. Another problem was that the visor started steaming up as soon as I put the lid on. It seemed there's hardly any room for breathing.
I still like the design of the helmet, but they've shouldve made it lighter and shape it better. So at this time I'm sticking with my Quantum F. :compress:

Hi all,
I'm on the lookout for a new helmet and stuggling a bit.
At the moment I have a Xpeed full face helmet and was thinking about a flip-up helemt.
The Roof Boxer I tried with the flip-up chinbar was nice looking but I was concerned about the two metal press studs that keep the chinbar in place....wouldn't fancy my chances of it staying in place in a fall.
The Caberg flip-up wasn't bad but didn't feel right. Also, the flip down sun visor thing didn't seem suitable for the upright position of an AT, holding my head upright it only half covered my eyes, prob be ok an a sporty bike.
The one that fitted best was the Shoei flip-up, my problem with that is the cost, I'm not fully convinced that it's worth £260.
My other thought was to get a Motocross sytle helmet and googles.....anybody have a view on whether that's a good idea or not.
Only thing there is to find googles suitable for wearing over glasses...I know Scott do some.

I bought a Roof helmet, had to send it back, it was a total pile of cr*p. Open face helmet up to spec` but the flip part was not. When the flip was flipped the top of the lid got scratched. Very poor quality.

Forgot to say that I was also thinking about an open faced helmet but maybe that's not one of my better ideas ???

I have both full face and open. Open faced is great for those four days of Summer riding that we have.

Arai tour-x the only helmet you ever need
Arai quality (and price) Moto-x style with cleaver visor operation, also removable so helmet can be used with goggles.
Peak is adjustable and removable, again, so helmet can be used with a sports bike..............one very happy pilot. With regard to noise levels, i never ride without ear plugs. (cuts out all know levels of whinging wife.........@ bench seat)!
 marcus
yep, got to be an Arai tour - x! its what i use on my transalp. bit noisey but then ear plugs sort this. the only real problem is visor misting, useing a fog city sorted this!

I too have eventually settled on an Arai TourX lid. I've always had Arai helmets as my head seemed to be the right shape for them. However I found that I needed a tall screen with my QuantumF, whereas the standard screen is fine with TourX. I think it's to do with the peak, which seems to smooth out the air flow coming off of the top of the screen. I find myself tilting my head down slightly when riding fast to iron out any buffeting. But I'm a shortarse and I expect taller riders would have less problems. I tend to ride with goggles, as over long distances they're far more comfortable than sunglasses. I believe Scott make goggles specifically to go over spectacles.

I also succumbed to a Roof a couple of years ago when riding through France. A dealer had a great deal on a fighter-pilot style lid, complete with removable chin piece and iridium mirrored visor. Shockingly poor build quality, the chin piece was literally touching my chin, and the noise levels were horrendous. However... it was impossibly cool riding through a hot French summer doing a Judge Dredd impersonation! Must get a photo sometime...

I find it very hard to justify to myself the risk of wearing an open face helmet these days. I've written off 2 helmets in my riding career, and in both cases the visor and chin guard were nicely mashed up. I'm not pretty to begin with, so I can't afford to get any uglier!
Nice action shot Iain!
Isn't Tour-X rather heavy? Even the extra 100g make a big difference after a long day of riding.
Also - won't a nice fitting MX helmet be better than the Tour-X? It's lighter, cheaper and can be used with goggles or shades.
How much did you pay for your Tour-X? I guess after 'Long Way Round' came out few months ago people will be buying more of them and prices will go up.
As for the open face lids - the guys from Mill Hill went twice round the world with them withough any trouble. They had a few crashes too, but non of them got their face smashed. How did they do it?

You could argue that a lighter helmet would be affected by turbulance more than a heavier one, thus requiring more neck muscle exercise to keep a steady head. I've done some long days in the saddle, and usually it isn't my neck that aches at the end!

MX lids are generally designed to ventilate a sweaty rider doing slowish speeds. Translate that to a stint of motorway riding and you'll find your face and chin frozen solid! Also MX lids tend to be louder than road lids, even the TourX.
However the killer feature of the TourX is the visor. As soon as it get's dark or the rain starts coming down, you whip off the goggles and flip the visor down. No messing around changing a tinted goggle lens for a clear, and no need for a snood to stop the rain using your nose for accupuncture!

I got mine from the NEC show a couple of years ago. Was expensive, but it's an Arai so to be expected.

I have seen a lot more of them around recently. Bloody posers!

Luck, more luck, and a double dose of luck on top!

Have a look around the internet. Depending on the colour & size, you should be able to find one for about £250

I've been out today and made my choice..Shoei Syncrotech II.
Not what I wanted to pay but the only other helmet that fitted my awkward properly was a Laser motocross helmet and in all honesty while it would be fun for a quick blast around the lanes I'd soon change my mind trying to catch the ferry in Pembroke or Dover.
They gave me a free dark visor too which was nice especially as the sun is splitting the stone here today.
Noise wise it's on a par with the full face I've got, that's with earplugs.
Seems to be a fair amount of air movement over my face...when it's closed smartarse !.....but that might be the vents, not sure if they were open or not.
John
Hmmmm. I'm tempted now.
Damn you lot for making me keep buying stuff.

Hello there Dave
As a newbie I really appreciate the knowledge I am gaining from reading the threads. The Tyre Poll is a great idea as I think that different bikes with different usage demand different tyres. Would it be possible to add another few polls and make them always available for update as a feature of the site? This thread shows me that big trailies generate helmet demands that are very specific. I think it would be very useful if we had current polls for such things as Helmets, Jackets, Trousers, Gloves, Boots, Tyres, Luggage,Extras etc. There seemed to be great interest in the Tyres poll ?
regards
Chucky

I'll speak to fewtrees to see what we can do.
