probably answered before but im lazy :-)
i do 70mph in 5th gear at 6000rpm, is that the usual?
how many km/miles do you get to a full tank (not mpg, actual miles on motorway driving)
thanks
oh yeah mine is a 600cc 1996 TA
Hi,
4 me : 6000 rpm, 5Th gear = 122 Km/h
a tank = 320 Km between 4.6 (if under 5200 rpm) and 6 L/100 Km (above 6000 rpm)
mine is a 650 cc

70mph=5250(ish) on my 650, not that that helps you much I suppose...
sory,correction !!!!!
6000 rpm = 132 Km/h

I can't remember what either of my 600 TA's did rpm wise at 70, but I think it was very close to 6000. I fitted a 16 tooth output sprocket on my last one, and I seem to remember the rpm was then 5400 at 70, but it took a lot off the acceleration. Oddly, I've just fitted a 15 tooth output sprocket to my AT, and that has raised the rpm at 70 to that same 5600, so it's closer to the TA final reduction (see http://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1214).
On standard gearing, the most I ever got from either of my TAs was 180 miles - that was including reserve, but without actually running dry. To reserve it was normally 150 miles. This was normally at a fairly constant 80 mph. The raised gearing didn't make any noticeable difference to the TA in terms of MPG; I think both the TA and (especially) the AT are heavily influenced by wind resistance. Head winds and using a cut down screen affected MPG far more severely than any change in gearing. I hope that helps.
Hi,
Lord Stig ,
when you say that ""Head winds and using a cut down screen affected MPG far more severely " do you mean that for a lower gasoline consumption it's better to use a high screen and not the original short one ???
many thanks

Strangely enough, that's what I found. Obviously I have an unaerodynamic upper torso....
Best was with the standard screen with a Super Tenere screen bolted to in with tap washers between it and the standard screen to create an air slot. Worst was an Ermax extended screen cut down to within an inch of its life. The extended screen was pretty quiet, but the shorter one was quieter, so I preferred that except for the poorer MPG (down to 130 miles to reserve on a few occasions).

thanks guys, i was just wondering about it (i had a worry that my ta was underpowered and eating petrol) but im glad to see it seems to be the normal

5,200 rpm on my 650 and the 600 I had. Both on standard gearing.
The 650 does 200 miles before I fill up, can't remember exactly what the 600 did but it was less.

That's surprising - the 600 and 650 have very different gear ratios. The gearbox ratios even in the 600 changed between (I think) the earlier models and the VR, which was slightly taller (although from memory fifth is the same). The trouble is, it's difficult to accurately match what you see on the speedo with what appears on the taco - there is a lag between changes in road speed (if you can calculate what speed you are doing in a given RPM in a given gear, the result is a lot more accurate than what the speedo says). The AT is the tallest of the lot, with the RD07 having 16/46 final reduction (although with a shorter fifth gear), but even with my standard gearing I don't think (indicated) 70 mph was quite that low, although I could be very wrong. Interesting anyway!

My new (used) 2003 Transalp does about 240km per tank, but I allmost only drive in the city traffic with lots of stops and acceleration...

I get 180 miles per tank from my 650.
What sort of motorway speeds do you guys cruise at? The bike seems to be straining at anything over 85-90. I tend to think that up 75% of redline rpm for cruising should be fine.
Update... last tank went after 200~210...
But in everyday riding I get around 220~240... :?
I don't go faster then around 140 km/h, it gets too stressing on this bike, and I'm allways with the TopCase on...

Went to the Stella this year, motorway all the way, 80-85mph with full luggage.
Only got 120 MILES TO THE TANK !!!! (that's not including the 3 litre reserve).
Think I got me some fuelling problems

No offence, but I hope you do have some (easily sorted) fueling problems! I'd hate to think they all go like that :(
