Does anyone fancy a Southern ride out ?
I was thinking Salisbury Plain (On road and off) Nothing too serious...
Tank Ranges, followed by nice sweeping country roads, a Few Green Lanes, maybe try a section of the "Ridgeway" near Marlborough ?
80 - 100 Miles round trip
Sandwiches or a Liquid lunch
Raises hand!
Me me me...........

I was thinking la first weekend in July.
Im at Le Mans for the 24 Hr Grand Prix from 12th - 21st June, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed is the 27th / 28th June.
If there's interest, im sure we could plan something :)

Eric you need to get your priorities right. Baby last, AT first!
I was thinking la first weekend in July.
Sounds good to me....
As I've been travelling back over Sailsbury plain I wondered if it had some nice green lanes that we'd be able to tackle.
Oooo ooo ooo can't wait now.

well, with over 94,000 square acres, there are a few.
I have emailed the MOD to ask permission, and also to obtain infomation what tracks are open and what is restricted / closed.
First weekend looks ok so far, but I know the second weekend is definatly free.

You may find that all bikes/vehicles are now banned from ridgeway. Would like to attend if able to escape work!

nope. most of it is still classified as a BOAT. the idiots with enduro bikes cause a lot of hassel, these just dig up the ground. I was there a few weeks ago in a Landrover.. we did Newbury(oxford) to chippenham. no problems, all gates accessable, although the mud was quite bad.
When are we doing this? Next weekend?
If so what day?
Where we meeting, etc., etc.... ?

Dave, how far are you from Bristol, i know i can do there in an hour, perhaps we could meet up and join the rest from there
Sie
We can meet somewhere I have to come up generally to the M4 anyway and you'll be coming down to the M4 so just need to find somewhere convenient on the M4.

ok Dave, lets see what the others say, oh and er indoors will need to give me a pass or i just sneak out while she is at work
Will have an excuse now to watch the weather with Charlie
Sie
Earth calling Mr Vaughan.... are we on for this then as planned?

Oh dear, I wont be able to come on this one. I've just had the insurance company take my beloved away (bike not girl!), and replace it with a Hornet after a BMW decided to "kiss" the @.
This has made me even more a fan of the @. As soon as I got on (stood over) the Hornet and had to start looking through car windows to see the road ahead.
Hope its a good rideout, and should be back in possesion of the @ for the next one

When is this happening?

Seeing as young Mr Vaughan is the only one that knows where we're going he's fairly fundamental to this rideout.
So I guess its not on.
Its really a case of watching this space.
I've been speaking to Paul Hodson (of shiny bits fame) and he green lanes around and about but not on his AT he says!
I'm trying persuade him along as well. :-)

Sorry Guys for not keeping ahead of what is happening .. or should I say What I was hoping to do.
Last week was silly in work, so much so, they made me work for a change, and not surf teh web as I normally do.
Ive not had the time to get down to the MOD and get plans of the BOARS, but speaking to my source, he was sawing as long as were not tearing up the plain ie on enduro bikes, and our bikes are road legal, we should beable to go anywhere.
Right, how does this sound ?
Meetup just outside Trowbridge, head off down the B3098 (we cannot get onto the Plain here as its a live firing range ( Large Calibre!!! )
Make our way to "Littleton Panell", and gain entry onto the plain just off the A360.
Play the rest by ear.
GPS optional, but will take a compass and will buy a map next week.
Now, when to do it ?
Im available any day except next saturday... :)
of and the weekend that RIAT is on !

Might not be able to make this weekend but who knows...
I think i can get some O/s maps loaded onto my ipaq and if anyones got a ciggie lighter built onto the bike then we could use that and GPS
Sie
So does it sound like a provisional Sunday 10th?
jvaughan
03-07-05, 10:09 PM
ok, so provisionally Sunday 10th then.
I have a 12volt power supply on my bike if you need power. Plus I will pop out and buy an OS Landranger map this week.
I have my new TKC80's too that I need to break in before the SKye trip :)

Hi guys,
I will confirm tomorrow by posting, waiting reply from my climbing buddies whether our planned bouldering :? is still going ahead Sunday. Haven't been on a rock for a while with this lardy arse so would prefer a bike rideout rather!

Sorry for the late reply but won't make this Sunday. Going to a hog roast in Andover Saturday evening and Sunday climbing at Harrisons Rocks down in Eridge
Luckilly week off next to recover :D
I'm definitely up for it, but if I'm the only one then its probably not worth doing.
Let me know if there are others going.
Seems a shame as I thought everyone was keen!

Count me in if its still on.......... sounds like the weather is going to be hot
Sie
So if we've got 3 Jason are you still on for it?
Sie do you want to meet up at the services? Perhaps Gordano although we'll need to back track a little, or you can come down to me (10 mins further) and we head across country if that would be nicer.
simplysie
08-07-05, 07:51 PM
i can come down to weston and meet you there, whatever is easier, if Jason aint up for it i can still come down and perhaps we can find somewhere to go, seems a waste to ruin my pass out for the day, its rare that i am online on a staurday so will pm you my contact details
Sie
Ok either way come down and we'll have a rideout. I'll PM details.

09-07-05, 10:55 AM
Still very much up for it.
I have to repack the speedo drive with grease, and refit to the bike, but Ill get that sorted today.
AS Ill be comming from andover, we can either do the plain, or we just meetup and take it from there ?
Give me a bell Dave, and we'll sort something out

Dave
When you have been in touch with MR V let me know when and where we are going to meet
Sie
Right then the formal arrangements are meeting in the centre of Warminster at 10:30 am.
Bring something to eat with you and plenty to drink as it will be hot.
We'll then decide what we do from there.
Anyone wanting to join me on the ride over then it should take about an hour so I'll be leaving about 09:30.
Eric let me know if you want to come down to my house to ride across or whether you're going to meet us there.
Sie I'll mail you as I assume you'll want to come down here first and the we'll ride across. I'll text you.

09-07-05, 06:35 PM
Supersmashinggreat! I'll meet you there as the long as the centre of Warminster isn't too large and we can find each other. Do you still have my mob# from last time? If I'm not there then please don't wait as it will be due to the wee man not co-operating.
chrs
e
Yes I have got your mob.
Text me if you're not going to be there so at least I know.
I've set my GPS for the High Street Warminster so we'll see!
jvaughan
09-07-05, 09:23 PM

Also have 2 OS Maps and Ill bring a compass its in case.
IUll be leaving Andover about 09:00, and going via Salisbury / A303 / Larkhill anyone wanting to join me on the ride over, feel free to call before 9am tomorrow.
See you all there.
Jason
Well what a hot day. We were totally cooked.
Thanks to Jason for showing us around Salisbury Plain, especially the live firing range it was interesting, shall we say.
We got on to the loose stuff a fair bit.
Hope everyone got back ok.
Pics to follow, am just resing them now.

You guys were quick, i was still on the M5 when you were posting, top day with some top guys.
Thanks Jason for a great day

Well you did have a little further to go than us!
I don't think I've sweat so much in all my life. I've drunk 5 pints of water since I've been back plus the 2 pints whilst we were out.

Well you did have a little further to go than us!
Managed to clock up nearly 400 miles today, and i know what you mean about the water, trouble is i have to dilute my water by adding yeast and hops too it. :D
So whens the next ride out, and any chance of having one a little closer to home, come on guys, we have had the nothern run and a southern run, how about a central one ?????

No wonder you clocked up 400 miles if you missed the turning!
How lovely!
I'm sure a rideout up near you would be good.
You'd need to lead though as certainly I don't know the area. Any off roading by you?

10-07-05, 08:23 PM
There must be some offroading up here, but nothing on the scale off Salisbury Plains
i know there is quite a bit for mountain biking but that aint quite the same is it, also there used to be a sand quarry that was open to bikes
One place i would like to explore is the Long Myndd, a small mountain/big hill at Church Stretton, has anyone been there???
let me look into it unless anyone else has any ideas

Guys, great to see you all, and glad you got home ok.
Ive just come back from the Plain again (told my neighbour about this afternoons fun, and we decided to go back out, and see what it was like at night !!!). (also time to think about auxillary lights)
I now have got my bearings for the North of the Plain, and, next time, will plan something to include the Tank driving courses, and maybe some of the lesser known stuff (deserted villages etc).
The Bike bit the dust twice during the day, but no damage. 8)
Got home just intime too to finish off the garden, and finish painting the garden fence (Keeps me in bonus points with the wife!)
It was actually so good I think we should make it a regular event.
I loved it.
Any time you're going Jason then post up here and certainly I'd be up for it.

OK, How about once a Month ?
Weather / Military movements permitting of course.
Ill see if I can knock up some reduced A4 pdf's, giving some infomation / Maps (all reproduced without copyright permission!), together with things like emergency help lines and contact details.
Then Dave, if you want to Host, interested party's can download and laminate should they so wish.
Incidently, just been looking, and wouldnt mind a blast through the Mendips and maybe the Cotswolds
Sounds fantastic. I'd love to get to know the Plains a bit better.
I'll host the pdf no problems.
As to the Mendips, etc... I can certainly do a rideout around the gorges, etc, but I'm not sure of any off-roading that we can do, and I'm really in to that at the moment.
I'll let you set the next date, but I'm looking forward to it already!
I really fancy a go at the tank track.
We should get someone like Mr Woolley along that's good with the camera.
Especially when I try to be the first to loop the loop on an AT. Well its got to be done hasn't it.
