All you new members out there that have ben lurking but not posting.....
here's a thread for you to say Hi in.
We'd love to hear from you.
Just post here by replying to this thread and we'll keep it going.
Be nice to know where you are as well in case you fancy joining in the rideouts.
I've also come to the conclusion that as we're such a big family all over the world there's no point in aiming this site at the UK riders any more although that's where the majority are based. So if you fancy organising a ride out in your country then please post up in the rideouts forum as well!
And anything I can do or you want me to develop then let me know.
Welcome new peeps.

I really want an 1150GS Adventurer, but am struggling to justify it.

From the South of ireland here, In the process of buying an AT, when i realised I'm tall enough for both feet to touch the ground(5'11). The fact that the bike i'm looking at has a lowered seat helps too...

Thanks, it's a great bike but it's time for it to go. I'm no longer working so I can't justify a "toy" with that kind of value and to that end I'm looking for a Twinky for about £2000 that won't make me feel so guilty when I realise how little I'm using it.
Obviously not to replace it at all would be the best idea, but I can't imagine being without a bike, even if it only comes out once or twice a month! Saw a couple of ATs in France recently, realised that it was what I wanted and looked in a copy of MCN that I'd brought with me where I discovered that you could get them for (almost!) what I want to spend. So here goes!
Roll up, roll up, get your BMW here! :D

Hop over to the For Sale/Wanted forum then, there are two or three for sale there.
Just as soon as the GS is gone, I'll be there, unstoppable, with money scorching holes in my pockets!
Anyone want a GS? Please? :D

Hi Everyone.
Just joined and finding my way round the site. I bought an 02 Transalp about a month ago and find any and every excuse to get it rolling. I just have one little battle with the seat which wants me to sit against the tank when I want to sit further up the hill, but I'm working on that.
I live on the Hampshire/Dorset border and would like to join a ride out sometime, although not ready to tackle the Salisbury Plain yet!!
Hope to meet some of you sometime.
John
You'll be fine on the plain.... seriously.
It was all pretty easy going.
Come along and say hi.
Hello I am honestly a new member and am thinking of buying a africa twin when I leave school because there a very big bike and and I have very long legs.
It will take me a long time to save up my 3 pounds a week pocket money but I am stopping the booze and fags because the nice asbo I have been put on keeps me in the house.
When I go to secondary school I can get a part time job to help me save.
Thankyou.
Oh and welcome all the new members we really are normal you know ask yen!

I've just accused a bloke on the dual sport forum of being you with a different name. He's mislaid a similar amount of limb (bloody careless where they leave stuff some people) and owns a Honda Tran Slap.
He's just told us about how he's had to make new higher mountings for the footrests on his 225 Serow cos when he trail rides in ruts he keeps snapping his artificial foot and shin off.
I got my false leg stuck in some marsh once on an xt600e and it came off not funny when your on your own and miles away from civilisation.
Well ok yes it is.
Ive taken the release button off my leg becuase it kept falling off in funny places usually when I am surrounded by people bugger :?
And I know were my leg is its kept in a jar were they remove cell samples to breed a new race of super humans gosh I am so proud.

Hi Guys, a little bit of my history courtesy of Italian Import Proud New Owner, centre stands and that type of stuff. Africa Twin discussion forum. Great help from the guys though. Had it two months now, using it to an from work, makes you look forward to going. Its got a funny colour scheme though, didn't like it a first, but its growing on me. Will try and post a picture, when I gain the technical skills. Sunny Prestwick, West of Scotland. ATs, are like hens teeth up here.

Hello, I´m from Portugal and ride a 2004 Transalp, only 7200 miles yet.
I posted a thread introducing myself before seeing this one, sorry.
I´ll post a couple of pictures from one or two rides so you see what´s it like over here.
I´m enjoying this bike a lot, although sometimes I wish for something a bit more offroadable, never got stuck though (that´s a good thing cause I ride alone)
Welcome Pete.

Hello everybody, I made a brief appearance elsewhere asking about saddle heights. I currently ride a Yam Fazer, but I'm trying to swap it for a 99 TA.
I see that several people on here do scuba diving...I'm a BSAC Dive Leader - We could organise a wicked seaside rideout and dive (or then again if this group is half as apathetic as the Fazer group, probably not  )
Anyway, I'm really enjoying the intellect and razor sharp wit of this group.
hi! happy to be here

And the whole morning I was convincing myself the 17000 I did in 16 months was alot
simple! :)
2 trips uk to poland and monday to friday as a bike courier, 5 months = 6x oil & filter, 3x air filter, 2x chain and sprockets (need new one soon), 1x output shaft i think (english no good sorry) 2x light bulb front, 1x light bulb tail, 2x light bulb (one that's enlightening fuel gauge and speedo), 1x fuse, 16x spark plugs (new soon), 1x clutch lever, 2x front brake lever, 2x front tyre, 3x rear tyre (new soon), sometimes i think its not worth it :D

I found this site via Google, I have been looking for Rupps or Boats on Salisbury Plain
I have been road racing for twenty years or so but interest has finally dwindled.
Green laning/trial riding !!! yep I thought I would give it a go
First reason
1. Im far too fat ! I have heard this will be good exercise
2. It was bloody cheap !
3. I am a very social type, would love to go on rides with others.
So :She is a old 1988 bike, 95% complete (e-bay) bargain so im not worried if she gets a beating ! ( I do tend to fall off more than most ).
Has anyone owned one ?? what are you oppinions on them ?.
I live in Bournemouth, is there anyone in Dorset that would like to join me on a trip along Salisbury Plain (or anywhere else !)
Do you know of any other routes in this area , would you like to share the info ?
I would also like to travel a little further >>>Wales // Would this be too tiring for a un-fit noob.
Off road schools (Dorset) Any reccomendations ?
Any advice welcome, Cheers

Excellent stuff. Well, im mad enough to be continuing to dive right through the winter this year in my trusty 14mm Semi Dry.
Last year, at Vobster Quay, I surfaced from a 40 minute dive to be greated by a snow storm and the owners axiously waiting for me and my buddy to surface so they could shut up shop and go home !!!
Dont recommend trying to get all the diving gear on an AT though (tried it and failed). Im a BSAC Sports Diver WooHoo :colors:

Simon;
I take it you have a black one too, I'm afraid I spoil the look by wearing a reflective jacket ..
The bike isn't quite mine yet (still sorting finance) and I've not ridden it yet but I've sat on it and the handlebars seem ok. It also has heated grips - dead posh eh ? I always used muffler thingies and good gloves - so this will be luxury.
Question for all :
I've had CX's for the past 10 years so I'm wondering about fitting/converting some nice chrome cx crash bars onto an XRV... silly ?
I'm going to be strapped for cash with this loan so I'm looking at doing things on the cheap..

Just a brief intro. I bought a Varadero 1000 just over a week ago and I'm enjoying every minute! Looking forward to the better weather when I can do some longer trips.
I've been riding for about 25 years, having worked my way up from a Yamaha DT 175, through Honda CB250N, Kawasaki GT550 (big mistake), Honda CB500, Honda VFR800, BMW R1150RS (bigger mistake), and now the Vara.
Really envious of your rides on Salisbury Plains rides. Beginning to wish I had an Africa Twin too. How about organising an "easy" ride for novices and Vara owners in summer 2006? Can you find a route that avoids tricky obstacles? I'd rather come back wanting more than wreck my new bike!!

Welcome mate.
It is possible to do some less taxing riding over the plain if a route is chosen that has the gravelled road and tracked track side by side. You can then take the gravelled road whilst those that want to plough on through the dirt.
Having said that I don't think that there's much that we did on the last jaunt that a Varadero couldn't have coped with. Perhaps the diversion through the wood might have been a little too much. For that you really need knobblies on. Although Chad managed ok and he was on fairly standard tyres.

Sounds fun,
I legally off-road in S.Wales using RUPPS,UCR'S etc. on a DRZ400(sorry  ),but Alun Michaels (the natzi rambling minister) :pukeleft: new bill has gone through parliament now looking like all RUPPS will be downgraded to Bridalway status, so you've got limited time to offroad legally on anything except BOATS!(Byways Open To All Traffic)
Of course you could buy a pushbike,a horse, or a 1000 acre estate!
Anyone interested in a DRZ ? (sorry)
Plenty of BOATS on Salisbury Plain come and join us there on the next visit.

Hello, I have already posted a hello in the transalp bit before I noticed this one - Sorry  So I'll do it again.
Just bought my Black 04 Transalp after a disastrous experience with a Buell Lightning. Typical girlie didn't listen to the blokes who warned me but liked the sound of the engine and the fact it left their bikes standing. Not for long though, little bit of rain soon sorted that out and the bloody thing decided to get all hormonal on me - typical a moody bike. After 6 weeks of going back and fore to the dealership to get it fixed I had enough and got rid of it. (Left me out of pocket though  )
Test rode loads of bikes and really liked the Transalp.. My hubby had a Africa Twin for years so that was that. Have been riding it to work for the last week and have had great fun on it.
I tend to give my bike names (that must be a girl thing too) My first was a CB 500 which I called Prozac - I am sure you can guess why. The Buell I called Marmite - Love it or hate it - I now know which. This one is Toes - because that is the only bit of me that can reach the floor. I am alright as long as I don't stop .
Anyway that's enough of my ramblings. Look forward to chatting on the forum.

Mabel, don't worry there are several ways of lowering the seat, but with a seat hieght of 34" and an inside leg of 31" I also only touch down with toes, you just have to stay in gear at the junctions with your right foot on the brake, the clutch pulled in and lean left so your left foot's down flat, then clutch out lean right a bit and AAAAAAWWWWWAAAAAYYYYYYYYY

Hi all, I've been a member for awhile now but never had the chance to get on here properly, well here goes,
I've always loved the style of the @ but could never find one I liked, that was until I moved from the North East to the south of France, there I met a friend who had just bought a @ but didn't know wot to do with it, (sell it to me ) great news, I bought the bike RD07a Red/White/Blue. Never looked back,Up side.. It still has french plates so not to worried when I get flashed from a speed camera every now and then and the insurance is cheaper in france.Still got my house there. That was back in June 04 and have been riding it ever since, still got only 17km on the clock,Fitted a few extra's:-- Kappa 48ltr back box, wingrack, heated grips,12v adpt, autocom 7-phone,mp3,gps, spotlights and a tall touring screen. I live in Bognor Regis at the moment working.
Never been on a rideout or to a meeting but would love to get out more with fellow @ riders so i can enjoy the bike even more ... Cheers all :P
Hi I have just registered on this fantastic site! Hey all.
I'm new here so please be gentle!
I'm looking to buy an AT, as the form of transport for a bit of an adventure. I've been riding sportsbikes for years and love 'em to bits, but my TL aint gonna get me round Morocco! (I'm bored, so I want to go away for a couple of months and do something interesting next spring, want to get the bike sorted sooner rather than later).
So - I'll put a post in the AT forum asking for hints and tips of what to look for - any advice on particular AT foibles very gratefully received!
Look forward to chatting to some of you knowledgeable owners about it all...

Hi everyone.
Sorry for not introducing myself sooner.
I love the site, good work.
I live outside the UK in sunny Ireland and have a TA about six years which (along with the ****E road surfaces that we pay a lot of money) for has cured me of my lust for fast sportsbikes.
I'm an off-road virgin and was wondering about taking an off-road course in the UK. Anyone have any opinions on them, they all seem quite dear?
Hello and welcome.

Towards the bottom of the page that opens and the next there is a report on a trip some of the lads did (I missed it through work) to the Yamaha School in Winchester and it appears to have been well worth it and ideal for beginers.
Hope that helps!

We (McVicar, myself, Quarryman and Stoo) made fools of ourselves on a MX track a few weeks ago. We all had a fantastic time and thought we were
fast, smooth and elegant, but probably looked like the four twats on dirtbikes that we were*!
Let's just say that we're slightly lacking in experience at the moment, or at least I am, but that we're open to suggestion!

I'm booked in on the Yamaha school at their Sussex site in a couple of weeks. I got the last place on that day, and they do seem to get booked up quite a long way ahead.
I'll let you know after I've done it, but I reckon that £150 for a full day's instruction including bike hire is very reasonable!

would be well up for another session rounda dirt track. Stoo and I were looking at doing the Yam school again, but at their Bolton venue in august as it was more off road than motocross apparently. Happy to put travellers up at my place if you wanted to make a weekend of it slimie / McVicar et al. Could maybe tie it in with a ride over to north wales and a barbeque? Stoo and I are away till july, but anytime after that would be possible.
just thought i'd pop in and say hi

Hi, welcome, you can start by telling us about you and your ride
Hi
Just registered and saying hello!
Not had a bike for a few years, sold my Thundercat about six years ago but got all itchy again, so bid on Ebay and won a 03 plate Transalp with 17,000 on the clock a couple of months ago.
I live in Bridgend, South wales...noticed a few posts on here about rideouts in the area, so hopefully will meet up with a few of you shortly..

I have a '97 @ which I have had for 4 years, bought it when I had some spare money and the wife said I could
Mine is black and gold and is used occasionally.
Anyone else live near Hemel Hempstead, Herts?
Welcome mate.
Glad to have you around.
Hello! Great forum!
Been lurking a while so I decided to join up.

Ok, I presume this is where I can find out about Africa Twins… and possibly defecting from cruising on my Valkyrie. In the past I’ve given the Triumph Tiger a fair crack and don’t want to go there again. Seems like AT’s are good all round so what do I look out for, which are the better years etc. More importantly are there any local owner groups/meets in or near Peak District/Derbyshire?
Thanks in anticipation

Hi Mick,

Now you've started something.
RD04s are the best in the traditional White, blue, red livery, obviously. Some people say Black RD07s are faster or the Red, White and Blue ones are the best, but they know nothing.

Hi guys, new to the forum, my name's Andy, I'm from a wee town called Ayr, in south-west Scotland.
I ride a blue '03 transalp, my first big bike since passing my test in July. Previously I had a 125 varadero for a year, had fun on that, here's hoping there's a few meets, rideouts etc, I'll be sure to pop along as often as I can.
Well, ta-ra for now, see you lot around here later!
Cheers :D
Just clocking in - marty from N.ireland, got myself a 92 Dominator for my winter hack to work, and am well impressed with it, my other bike is a gixer 600 K3.
It took me ages to find a clean Dominator, i had a spin on one a while back and just loved it, 25,000 on the clock, and still pulls like a race horse on steriods.

Hi,
another newbie to this site, which I found today :D
I have an '02 @ which I've owned from new....great bike, fulfils my commuting requirements brilliantly.
I'm afraid I have a bike buying compulsion  so also have a '76 CB750K6, two Yam XJR1300's, and a MT01, plus the wife has a Hornet 600!
Hopefully I'll now find some useful stuff within this site (since I've introduced before I've looked around too much  )

O.k., here you go....
http://www.yamahaxjrownersclub.com/phpbb2/modules/gallery/albums/album35/DSC00021.jpg
Bought new in Sept. '02, it has a scotoiler (works well retaining the derailment plate), centre stand, Givi rack, and a rather dashing top box
Used mostly for commuting.
Now on 14,500 miles with new Metzeler Tourance tyres fitted at 11,500.
Two disappointing things:
1. The chain was shagged out at 13k, in spite of the scotoiler, so c&s's have been renewed (my '99 Yam XJR1300 has done 35k on its original chain and it's still serviceable).
2. The head bearings are slightly 'notchy' at '12 o'clock' which indicates they're worn Again, my XJR's still on its original head bearings

They all do that sir.... well I went through 2 OEM chains in about 15K. After that DID X Ring Premium all the way and you'll get close to the Yam figure if you use a Scottoiler.
Hi. I am new to this site and would like to say hello. I have just purchased an 52 plate XR400 from ebay. I used to have a 1979 SP400 for thrashing about on when I was in my early twenties, but had to sell it when I bought a house. When she went I said "I can always buy another one..." Fifteen years later I am back in the saddle, nearly. Passed my theory test and am booking onto a direct access course next week!
I would be interested to hear from other XR400 owners on this site. I am particually interested in tyre choices as this bike has full on motorcross tyres which are not road legal.
Hey Tony welcome aboard mate.
We don't have a big XR following here but that's something that could change if there was enough interest. Post your question up in the "Other Trail Bikes Forum" and you should get some answers.
Oh and come and join us on the rideouts and meets. :teeth:

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I have trawled the net for XR400 stuff and have to admit there is not as much out there as I expected. This forum is the closest I found to other XR owners.
With regards to photos, I have the back wheel out at the moment. 1st reason to clean it it a bit and 2nd reason it helps me resist temtation to blast down the street before I have passed my test!
However, when we are up and running I intend to get it muddy and will post some pics on the forum.
Tony.
Tony I've asked opinion about starting an XR specific forum.
And I've created an XR forum for you...
So you'd better go play in there now that I've created it.  :teeth: :teeth: :thumb:
Hola folks, just signed in.
Been an @ owner in the past- had a '97 a couple of years ago, Spain being the furthest venture on that one. To my eternal shame I traded it in for way too little and a KTM950 back 04. Loved the KTM, but for what I got on the @ I shoulda kept it as a 2nd.
Been bikeless a year now and busting for another. Was planning an XR650R, but am having little thoughts of returning to the @ world.
Jem.
Welcome back and hang around whatever you get.
I've just started up an XR forum.
Join us on some rideouts as well. :D:D:D

Currently have an 04 cb1300 and a kl650b tengai. It was the tengai that got me hooked on trail bikes. Have to sell her now though to make some room in the garage. Hello
I have just passed my test on varadero 125 and i am thinking of trading upto a 650@ but I am a bit worried that it won't be much faster than what I have already got. What do you think would i be better looking for an africa twin or is the 650@ OK (I may ride it 2 up).
Also I know the attached will amaze all of you who view it and it isn't a joke but something that will provide hours of entertainment for all. I know how it works so once you work it out keep it to yourself.

Hi Basil welcome to the site, congratulations on passing your test, after I passed my test my first bike was a CB500 which although it wasn't hugely powerful or fast it allowed me to practice the skills that I learnt when riding. I loved that bike then went to a 1000cc muscle bike which I found too twitch and tempremental so bought my 650 Transalp.
I love the transalp I find it has enough power and is comfortable over distance.
Test ride as many as you can and go with the bike you are most comfortable riding.

Ok Basil you got me confused, do you mean a 650@ (AT short for Africa Twin) or a 650 TA (short for Transalp), either way they will get close to 100mph and have tons more power than your 125 Vara.
Oh and what's supposed to be attached, I don't see nothin' :D

20-04-07, 08:47 PM
I appologise for my ignorance I am thinking of upgrading to a 650 transalp but as I may ride it 2 up I wonder if the power of a 750 africa twin would be more suitable.
Regarding the attachment I have the most amazing computer trick that will amaze you all at least once and your friends probably more than once but I am stuggling to attach it to my posting. Can anyone explain how I do it?

You shouldn't have a problem riding two up on a Transalp, they are a very good all rounder, but I'm no expert, try posting the same message up in the Transalp section, a 750 AT is obviously going to have more power, but it will be a lot heavier so there may not be as big a difference as you think.
Dunno about attachments ask in the techy "problems with the forum" section, I only know where the on button is :D

Hey All!
Been lurking here for quite a while. Haven't ridden on the street in nearly 20 years but as I approach my middle years, find myself yearning to get back to riding and Adventure Touring in particular. My dream is to tour England, Scotland, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand before I get too crusty to do it.
I've spent a lot of time lusting after your beautiful @'s while lamenting the fact that they are so scarce over here in the States. Could have picked one up on e-Bay about a year ago that some guy had managed to import and was nearly showroom new but did not have $13K to jump on it at the time :banghead:.
Guess I'll have to wait and see if BMW can pull their heads out of their :bootyshake: and hopefully produce a jewel in the F800GS. The reports so far from European owners of the S and ST seem very promising and that 800cc Bombardier-Rotax motor looks like it might be a great base to build an Adventure Tourer capable of two-up, long distance travels. Until then, I'm probably going to pick up something like a Suzuki DL650 V-Strom to start and work on re-learning my riding and survival skills.
Anyhow, you folks have a great site here with lots of great members. The Africa Twin's are beautiful bikes and I'll always lust after them!
Hope to see you across the pond someday soon

Dave
I Dave, good that you've stopped lurking. Welcome to the site, and if your going to tour any part of the UK you really need to do Wales (cause we got the best biking roads here :D ) and Ireland too.

Says who!
Dave Wales translates to... they've got a lot of sheep that lurk hidden behind corners, that jump out from no-where to test your combined alertness and biking skills out! ;)

Is it better to say United Kingdom rather than England? Does UK encompass the whole shebang?
Is it better to say United Kingdom rather than England? Does UK encompass the whole shebang?
UK includes us all, yep... Northern Island, Wales, Scotland, England, Bits of Basra and some very suspect Islands dotted around... Though when questioned we try not to admit owning Liverpool... ;)

Yep a tour of the UK sounds like a fine idea, in fact I think I might just do that myself in July
Then I can give a completely unbias opinion about where the best roads are. (Will need to do Ireland seperately but maybe we could get one of the Irish lads to give a bit of a comparrison just to be fair.)

Hi,
Newbie to the forum. I'm still a learner on the 'L' plates and I'm the very proud owner of a '54 Silver Baby Vara, located just north of Lincoln.
Have been riding since Sept last year so I'm hoping to maybe lose the 'L' plates sometime this summer, before the powers that be make the test more difficult ;) Fully intend to keep the Baby Vara for some time after, although I do aspire to eventually upgrade to the full-fat machine. :D

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick note for my first post.
I have just bought an XR650L.
Unfortunatly the previous owner thought it would be a good idea to paint the frame black hammerite and to matt black spray the plastics. So in a few months she will be coming off the road for a full strip and rebuild.
In the meantime, while the sun is out, I'm riding her as much as possible so if anyone is in the Shropshire area and fancies a ride out let me know
Welcome Mal. Great to have another XR owner on the books.
Post in the rideouts forum if you want to hook up with someone.

White frame with white and blue plastics (as per pic), but the black is growing on me so the frame might get a black powder coating in the winter just to tidy it up a bit
Hi Everyone, new member here. Great site shame I didn't find it earlier. Anyhow, I've recently returned to Honda trailbikes after many years in the wilderness. Just got an FMX, okay it's not a trailbike and most would agree it's not a "proper" supermoto, but a lot of fun none the less. I've owned an ridden a few Hondas in the past, find snaps of a few of them attached. Picture of new bike to follow.

Hi Fiona! I'm sure Jim's got plenty of advice to give you, but assume that everyone else on the road (and a fair few of those on the pavements) is out to get you and ride accordingly! Don't be pushed, or pulled, by others to ride faster than you're comfortable with for your ability and the road conditions.
You've got all the gear anyway so you're halfway there!

I live out in Dubai, UAE so if there are any members here who'd like to meet up, get in contact and we'll plan something for when the weathers a bit better.
Other than that I've started rebuilding my Twin last week. Plan to post on the wiki. Will have to figure out a structure first though. Have a look at my Flickr page for now. www.flickr.co.photos/photos/twinadventure

Yea here I got alot of options to go and ride, did go out on the tar road with a local on a Kawasaki 600 roadbike, I do not know why some of the roadies like to fall back 1km or so then thunder past one at 200km/h only to fall back only to do it again.....!!!!??? Is this fun?;) ;) Looks like their options is really limited, I was enjoying myself at 140 km/h and just there and then decided to go offroad just to shake him off, we can go in one direction and return on another road, lots of options, see more do more!
Will post pics later:sad2: :sad2:

Hi all.
Just a quick intro from me. Current rides are 94 speed triple, 88 gpz500 cafe racer turbo project, 79 SR500 flat tracker, 82 TR1 long termer.
I had a 99 Transalp Anniversary special when they came out but chopped for a DR600 after 7 months and 9000 miles. To be honest I should've bought an AT like I really wanted, but hey.
I'm still looking for an AT and building the funds up for when the right one pops up.
Anyway. Thats me.
Welcome to the party Tom whatever bike you've got come and join us at the National Meet you'll meet loads of great people and be able to talk about your next bike and get loads of advice.
