So after our fun last time... does anyone fancy another jaunt?
And if so when is best?
Sometime in the next 2 weeks? Saturday / Sunday?

jvaughan

potentially yes.

Cannot say for certain yet, as I have a garden to finish, a house to paint, and a Nursery to erect.

Make it a Sunday, with enough advance warning, and I'll be there. Do we have someone with an up-to-date understanding of the rights of way and any current TROs in place?

I will also put this in my dairy, can do either the 14th or the 21st of August.

I'm not up on that and I think last time we all relied on Jason.
Is it easier that its Salisbury plain and the tracks are well signposted? I.e. the MOD have clearly signposted where you can and can't go. Not withstanding the fact that we strayed on to the live firing range last time!!

How does Sunday 14th August sound to everyone?

I have contacts that can help, plus, when I get some time, I will scan in my maps.

Waving at the Royal Tank Regiment as the AT goes under the tracks.

I have a couple of marked maps for the area, both showing a days route. I've ridden one 80 mile route twice before and it would be reasonable going for ATs on a dry day. Starts from the Stonehenge car park and takes in a Hercules landing strip that shares the route witha Byway. Signs all along saying "please check sky before proceeding"!!

Well if it's a bit of gentle offroading I wouldn't mind giving it a go. Would you need off road stlye tyres as mine are due to be replaced shortly.

Going on last time No. Eric (AfricanSwede) had standard tyres on and was fine. It wasn't tough going by any stretch.
Although this time I actually fancy something more challenging. Jason did mention the tank driving course which I fancied a go on.
As Salisbury Plain's so big you generally have another route round anyway even if there was a tough bit.

Sure is. I do need to know the meeting point and time though. And if I can suggest an early-ish start, it'd fit in with my other weekend plans better.

I am still fine for this weekend and can do both days if that would suit/help someone. Early start is also prefered and let me know where abouts and when.

Bought an @ last week and was hoping to join you all on the plain for the first time, but unfortunately am away this weekend. Shame as I used to rent a cottage on the edge of it and know it fairly well. Hopefully will get to meet you all in the future.

Ducati dealer .. well, rumour has it they had a misunderstanding with the building owners and then closed the building, although there was another rumour that they were in trouble and they closed the Andover branch to keep Southampton and Exter open.

Yen are you up for this still..... otherwise we're running out of poeple that have the faintest clue where their going. :mrgreen:I think I explained myself badly before. I can't make it this month (I am with child, my son is visiting me for the next 2 weeks), I was offering the loan of two maps I have with a marked route on it. I have 1 map with an 80 mile route that I've ridden twice in the summer and a new route which I've yet to do. The going on the one I've done before should be okay for an AT. The one bit that's iffy, I would scrub out and show an alternative route. By iffy I mean the bit I have got lost on twice running.

I would like to get there one day though, I think it's a great place to ride with so much choice of route.

Bugger, missed this ... Would have been up for this.
How did it go ?

Colin
12-08-05, 10:23 AM
Trip went well, only a short run 25 miles around the Drovers trails, Myself on the AT, a mate on a well tricked up GS100 airhead who had never been off road before, another mate on his GS100 and his son on his new XR125. Left home in Bournemouth at 18.00 and got home at 23.30.

We did stop at the Horton inn for a drink at the end. We went out via Martins and pick up the track there, very ruty dry in 90% of the places, lots of over hanging greenery and one or two nice little water holes.

Scores on the door at the end. I came off twice the other three stayed up right

Hey there,

I can do the 28th - I know the area but not the off road tracks (from a bikers perspective). used to be posted at Roberts barracks, Larkhill. Drove MLRS in the area from time to time but that was a while ago (damn squaddie.....). You'll have to be gentle with me though, still bit of an AT virgin.

Still have some contacts in the Royal Artilleryat Larkhill if that helps. Count me in anyway.

Don't forget to check the Rideout thread for North Wales next month. Will be looking into it tomorrow regarding accomodation/timings etc.

MLRS isnt that the Rocket delivery system on the back of a tracked vehicle ?

Do you have any knowledge of the vehicle courses ? I know some of the Tank courses, and they really are Extreme ( 5 ft plus of water in places ).
I know there is a lot around the back of Tidworth too.

jvaughan
15-08-05, 10:48 AM
Any Chance of your "Contacts" being able to get hold of some "Hardware" for some pictures ?

Im thinking "AT's and APC's"??

"Challenger II Meets RD07"

The photo Opportunity would be very Cool.

Richie B
15-08-05, 04:24 PM
Yeah, MLRS is the Multiple Launch Rocket System that is mounted on a M2 Bradley chassis. I used to drive one when I was in 32 Regt RA. Good fun...

As for the tracks around the plain, i'm afraid it was so long ago they have probably all changed now. I doubt I could remember them anyway, the Army liked to send us out at night. I seem to remember a couple around "The Bustard" pub. Might come back to me once there.

As for photo's with APC's, etc, I imagine it may be a possibility on a week day. Squaddies don't like being dragged out on a weekend - it encroaches on their beer-drinking time. I'll call a mate of mine who is still posted there and let you know. Failing that, we could ride around until we find a Unit on exercise and sweet talk them.........

How about meeting where we met last in the centre of Warminster?
Say 10:00 or 10:30 for those travelling?
Bring something to eat and drink.

Who else is coming?

Maverick
22-08-05, 06:58 PM
Yeah that's seems ok although I have not been there. Else Fleet services on the A303 near Amesbury? I know the Plains is literally just around the corner from there.

Richie B
22-08-05, 07:37 PM

It takes about 1 hour ish to get from here to Warminster and is a lovely ride.

I think Maverick means the Countess services:

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=415000.293686227&Y=142500.101817949&width=500&height=300&gride=415538.293686227&gridn=141775.101817949&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&in.x=7&in.y=8&scale=50000

Ignore the red circle, its at the junction of the A303 and A345 where it says Countess Motel. Very easy to find.

Its only 14 miles away from my house :)
to Simplify things, get off the M3, at Junc 7 on the A303, keep going until you come to a roundabout (Watch the Speed Camera on the Hill as you approach Solstice Park), go around the roundabout, and doubleback on yourself.
The Services entrance is 20 Meters off the London Bound A303.

Thinking about it, We are ideally situated to get on the plain behind Larkhill from there. Also, some "Interesting" Green Lanes close by too.

Yep that's the services I was talking about, I will be there from 10:00 onwards. Last year when we did the plains I recall it is very close by those services and some nice bits. Who's bringing camera's? We need to get some nice action shots so put your nice posy clothes on guys

Will be taking the camera this time for some point and shoot action. I think the order of the day is Dress for protection. If you get a bit wet in the process .. so be it !!.

Richie I will be going around the M25 south towards the M3 early morning, don't mind going through London either as it should be quiet on Sunday morning. Let me know what time and where then we can travel from there.

It's about 100 miles from where I live in Essex to the 303 services. There is a couple of local pubs around else pack a sandwich :D

Maverick, sounds good - anywhere near the M25/M3 intersect sounds good. Will post a reply tomorrow when the ale has worn off with an idea where to meet up. Initial thought is: The petrol station just off the M25/M3 (Sunbury towards Kingston) Junction at Kempton Park Racecourse. It's only 2 mins away from the M'way. Say 0830?

Christ I need some zzzzzzzzzzzzzssss. Confirm 2mrw!

Guys its with sincere regret that I'm going to have to pull out of this one.
I'm really annoyed but I'm in the middle of fitting a bathroom that is taking far longer than I anticipated.
I've been at it for nearly 2 weeks now, and I've run out of holiday and go back to work on Tuesday!
So as you can see I can't afford the luxury of a day off.
I was hoping to make it if I was back on track but I'm still behind.

Please carry on as planned and have a super day. Take lots of photos and ride safely!

Cheers
Dave.

Hi all
Just managed to log onto the site with the help of Dave Slater. I ride a Yamaha Super Ten and was wondering if anyone would object to me tagging along on Sunday on the Salisbury Plain ride out.
I should be at the Countess services Amesbury for around 0930, so if that's ok I'll see you there.

Cheers

So close and yet so far.......

This morning I decided to join the guys (the bathroom and missus could wait!) and got to the services at the allotted time.
Whilst chatting I noticed a nail in my rear tyre. Bah.
Decided to pull it out and you can guess the rest.
70 miles from home on a bank holiday weekend.... lovely.

Anyway two cans of foamy stuff and I just managed to get home in 2 hours. Phew!
So sorry I didn't have chance to speak to you all. And a very big thank you for all the offers of help and to Maverick for the letting me have his spare can of foam.

Hope you all had a fantastic time.

Have had a bath and cleaned all of the mud from between my toes. Can't wait to clean the bike tommorrow. Hmmm....

Sorry didn't get to meet you properly Dave, better luck next time.

Possibly available for selection for the Wales trip, just need to run it past the Long Haired General!

sorry for pulling out too.
Had to pick the wife up from the hospital (false alarm) at mid day.
For the rest of the day, I spent it in thegarden, under a parasol, sleeping (we were up and heading for the hospital at Warp speed at 04:00 this morning.. damn my unborn child for disturbing my sleep!).

Next time, i WILL be there. You guys vertainly had the weather for it.

29-08-05, 05:29 PM
Well what a days biking, good company no primadonnas showing off, when we got a little lost no one blamed any one we just got on with it and found a new lane to ride down. Best of all when I found out that the AT could stand up on its own in a mud pool every one jumped in and help haul it out even Riche in his nice new jacket, not so clean at the end of the day.

Top day cant wait for the trip to Wales.

If any ones interested in going to do the Stella Alpina (colle del sommeiller 10,000 feet to the top ) next July start a new topic and lets see whos up for it.
