OK, hacked-off that I can't make the N. Wales weekend and inspired by MarkH's photo below...

http://www.keysound.com/assets/images/pan2.jpg

...does anyone fancy a weekend camping (Friday and Saturday night, return home Sunday) in the south-western Lake District before the clocks go back? Say 1st/2nd October.

I know the area well (I grew up there) and know of a couple of great campsites in Wasdale/Dunnerdale/Eskdale (pubs with good food nearby/good hiking right out of the sites/etc.) There are a couple of off-road trails if that takes your fancy, or we could do the high passes in a day if the weather's good.

Reply here or PM me if you're interested and I'll makes some enquires at the sites to make sure they're open and willing to host a few AT riders!

Will it rain ?

Probably  but Autumn is usually a relatively dry time in the Lakes.

Is it gonna be cold ?

Could be. Sleeping bag/ground mat/tent required.

Can Transalps come ?

Of course! And Varaderos or whatever.

Count me in then, but doesn't it clash with another one of those XRV mud bath meets ?

Yes, I think it might do. I'm flexible and could knock it back a week if that would that tempt some of the Salisbury Plain riders up north? If not I'll leave it as it is.

Your comments here

Double Damn .... It also clashes with my last sea dive of this year too.
No Salisbury Plain, no Lakes ... oh well, just fishpoo and effuent for me

Go on then. I'll be the token Varadero rider if it's the 1st and 2nd. Can't make the weekend after though. Might as well get some use out of that tent I bought in Penrith.

Probably not, it has been in the loft since Scotland. Wasn't planning to use it ever again. Fitted a 12v socket to the bike now so should be alright for inflating the luminous airbed.

OK, I've heard back from the 'first choice' campsite http://www.fishergroundcampsite.co.uk/ biker friendly, fires allowed and only 300 yds from the George IV Inn which does food too :D

There's no need to book, just turn up and pay.

If anyone is up for it, this sets us up for a circuit of the high passes on Saturday. Otherwise we can just make it up as we go along.

Touche mon amis...

Im fine, bruised ribs hurt like hell, bike is back to normal ... minus crash bars. gotta get a new helmet too.

I was hoping to go along to theis jaunt in the Lakes, but I need to get the geometry of the bike checked to be sure everything is ok when I assemble all the bits.
Dont fancy a long trip until I have had a service too.

Hello!

As there was only two takers for the Wales trip we have decided to postpone until next Spring and humbly ask you chaps if there would possibly be room for a couple of @'s on your Lakes trip.

Promise we (Colin and I) will behave and keep quiet at the back :D

Well, there's a few more than I thought there'd be. Fisherground are listed as a biker friendly campsite but I'll contact the them to double check they're prepared to accomodate us all, I'm pretty certain they won't be booked up at this time of year.

If there is a problem I know a couple of other sites nearby so we can spread ourselves around and take over the whole area :D

Richie B
20-09-05, 09:14 PM
Excellent. I will give Colin a bell soon and let him know the score. Are you starting Friday morning? If so I can ride up from London Thursday nite and crash at the in-laws place in Fleetwood ready to leave early the next morn. I'm sure the weekend will be worth the pain and grief of an overnighter with the in-laws from Hell. Jeez, the sacrifices I make in the name of biking.......

xrv_jim
21-09-05, 01:06 PM
Ritchie, I have to work until mid afternoon on Friday 30th and plan to ride over afterwards straight from work. I should be there early evening I hope.

Don't know what everyone else is up to though...?

We'll be riding up on Friday from Somerset. Hope to get there mid afternoon.

Richie B
22-09-05, 05:27 AM
In that case I'll probably do a few hours riding Thurday after work and crash over at my 'Olds' in Malvern just to cut down the trip a bit. 310 motorway miles in one sitting = sore a*se.

McVicar; I think Colin is planning on riding up from Somerset leaving early Friday morning. You may want to meet up/ride up together? I'm planning joining him as he makes his way north.

xrv_jim
22-09-05, 09:28 AM
OK - I've phoned the campsite and explained the numbers situation. They are generally OK with us coming but want to stress the following points.

1. They see themselves as a 'family site' so they insit that the site is quiet after 10.30 pm - any conversations after that time must be in hushed tones or conducted by semaphore/morse code.

2. Campfires are campfires, not bonfires. There are plenty of fire pits available and the don't want any 'new' fire areas.

3. They don't take bookings, you just turn up.

Right. I think we can we live with that and I don't want to p*ss these people off so, if you can't live with the conditions, I do know of another site that might be willing/able to accomodate us. Let me know here ASAP.

22-09-05, 01:38 PM
No probs with the site Jim.

I'll be setting off Friday lunch time, I WILL get lost a number of times 'cos I do that, so hopefully it will still be Friday when I get there.

Mc vicar and anyone else, I'm planing to go over Hardnot pass about 3.30pm on Friday, could meet up in Ambleside or Skelwith Bridge if you want to travel over with the slug Alp. Bring clean underwear and a new set of brake pads if you haven't been over before.

IanS

McVicar
23-09-05, 01:08 PM
Ian, have done the Hardnot pass before ( very interesting ) but as I've got to work Thursday night only finishing at 5.30am then riding the pass after 280 miles, fully loaded with camping gear, on a bike I can hardly touch the floor on, probably in the rain I think I'll pass. Thinking more of a gentle meander across the Shropshire/Cheshire countyside then shooting up the M6 from around Warrington..... Although if we have a good run and the sun is shining.......... Umm you'd better PM me your mobile number.

IanS
23-09-05, 02:30 PM

Despite the foul forecast (more rain than Waterside ) I'm still in...though some unexpected work may mean that I'll arrive a bit later than expected, most probably after dark.

If anyone decides they don't want to spend the weekend riding to/through the Lakes in the wind and the rain then that's OK. Remember we're not booked into the site as such, they just know we're probably turning up.

Looks like IanS will be first to arrive and has the responsibility of picking a pitch that won't flood

Right, don't want to worry anyone but I have been receiving some mixed messages from the campsite owners. Reading between the lines, I think they're nervous that we're gonna be a whoopin' and a hollerin', raping the cattle, stampeding the women, biting the heads of chickens...that sort of thing :headbang: . All harmless fun I know, but some people can find it a tad too boisterous.

In reality I'm sure they'll love us to bits when the meet us, but, I think we need a plan B just in case it all goes t*ts up.

Plan B (Mark 1) McVicar dresses up as a woman, projecting a sensible calming aura on behalf of the group. :puke:

Plan B (Mark 2) Here's a couple of alternative sites in the vicinity.

Hollins Farm, Boot, Eskdale
http://www.hollinsfarmcampsite.co.uk/

National Trust Campsite, Wasdale Head
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-holidays/w-camp/w-northwest-lakedistrict_camping/w-northwest-lakedistrict_camping-wasdale.htm

I suggest you print the details/directions of these other sites and we exchange mobile numbers just in case (bear in mind some areas of the Lake District have dodgy reception). I'll PM you all mine.

Oh, and plan C is that we all go and kip on the floor at my dear old Mum's house. She'd just love that.

Hi new here, I don't have an AT, a TA, or a varedero but I do have an old 89 'dommy' do I qualify. Couldn't make the lakes though anyway as I am committed to getting drunk in Otley but any future rideouts, then great.....so long as they're not too far as bits keep falling off the ol girl !!. Got the dominator early this year with the intention of getting off road a bit ( green laning, light stuff really ) but can I buggery find anywhere, apart from a bit of old land next to the railway track which they have now flattened for houses! Have seen BUMPYS in birstall Leeds on the net, anyone been? Where are all these green lanes?
So, basically I've just been using it on the roads, still bloody good fun though! browsed the site and Jim, yep I get down to squires ( I nearly showed my age and called it the milk bar) every now and then.
Anyway, just got back from watching the mighty Leeds demolish derby, had a few beers, so now its time to pat the wife ,shag the dog and go to bed.................think thats right?? Hope to meet you soon
