Unfortenately I won't be able to make this one as I am going to the Kendal Mountain Festival (http://www.mountainfilm.co.uk/) that weekend and collecting a windsurfer + kit a nice chap gave me for free close to Manchester.

Luckilly there will be more of these trips and hope you guys have loads of fun. Dave please take some pics of those deep puddles this time. I will download the tracks we did over the weekend if someone wants to load it into their GPS.

Cheers

Would be nice see you along again mate. I owe you a coffee as well!

Maverick
09-10-05, 08:19 PM
That will be cool if we can move it and will definitely make an effort to come along then. Would like to get some good water crossing shots and hopefully get the bike dirty again  Just spend 2,5 hours cleaning it yesterday so good enough reason to do it again all over!

Slimie
09-10-05, 08:57 PM
Just give me a bit of notice and I'll be there, but...I want to see pics of the windsurfer on your bike Maverick.
You are taking the bike to collect it, aren't you??

Ohh go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on...fancy a trip on the plains father? Errrhhhh no thanks Mrs Doyle...go on go on go on go on go on go on one little trip before the years ends father.....ohhhh ok Mrs Doyle

Chad if you want to meet up the Sunday morning on your way drop me a pm and we can organise the details.

Simon the Mrs has agreed that I can use her car so thank goodness for that! I would take a surfboard on a bike but windsurfer could result into a bit of an issue

Lord Stig

I might just make this one. I suspect worn out MT 90 ST's at this time of year will be fun (for everyone else, not for me!), but I could do with the exercise picking the bike up. Museum work isn't good for the physique....

Probably not going to beable to do this. Assuming Baby Vaughan is ontime (12th) I dont see the Wife letting me out to play for a few hours ... Unless ofcourse im at home and she has a cesarian, then they will keep her in for a few days to recover, then I can go !!!...

Will have to see !!!

You're a very brave man to even consider coming along! Although I did go for an off-road bimble about a week before my wife was due to give birth. Just made sure she had someone there to take her to the hospital and checked my mobile every mile or so. Also, the ride was about 30 minutes from my home. Good luck!

Chad
10-10-05, 06:36 PM

Suitable for novices.
When you say that, just how novice do you mean and what's the minimum requirement. I've got T66s on mine and while I'd love to have ago off road every now and then, getting a set of knobblies and changing them over each time seems like a lot of hassle.
With that in mind, am I better off saving myself the embarrassment of coming and waiting for the photos?

i get the feeling its one of the things you have to jump straight in . i intend to watch and learn and have a good time . ive got metzeler tourance tyres i dont know how they're going to cope . i cant wait to give it a go  :D

Nobody will pressure you to do anything that you don't want to do.
Pretty much with every obstacle there's an option to go around it safely so you only have to do as much as you want to.
The regulars can teach you the basic skills, such as standing up on the pegs to lower your centre of gravity, you'll get loads of support. And if the worst did come to the worst and you fell off its very likely that it would be a very low speed and in mud or grass so it would do little if no damage.
So come along and see how you get on.

ive been looking at the pictures of the last trip and seeing all the kit you guys have got. its making me realise how woefully under prepared i am
looks like a trip to the army surplus for some stopgap gear
can anybody recomend boots ,jackets, troosers mind you though im must be related to a yeti can anybody recomend yeti sized gear

Maverick
14-10-05, 09:26 PM
Chad I don't know what kit you do have but for offroad I think the most important thing is boots as it is very easy to hurt your ankles and legs in an off. It is not to say that you will have an off but rather prepared than not. Then you will probably get wet so two choices, either good breathable kit or a good cheap rain suit will work equally as well. I got on pretty good for 2,5 years with a decathlon £10 rain suit.

Gloves obviously and a helmet. You really don't need all the moto-x stuff just for a oneday offroad session so try and save your pennies. Besides by November it is pretty chilly so moto-x helmets is pretty useless anyway.

For tyre choices semi offroad is good but again if it's your first time take it easy and just get use to the gravel for starters. None of us are dakar racers so we all take it easy and enjoy the day - no pressure.

What are the meet details - time and place?
Presumably leave the topbox at home (apart from because they are ugly)?
Looking forward to it.

To keep it easy we'll meet again at the Countess services, Amesbury, just by the junction of the A303 and the A345 at 10:00am

I usually leave around Dartford at 8:00 to have a leisurely drive and arrive at the services just before 10:00. This normally includes a quick fuel top up and ass break

Is that a hack round the M25?
I may start a little earlier then and come down through Bromley to Westerham and do the A25, A24 to join the M25. It's a great road and at 8am on a Sunday should be a sweet ride.

That's the one mate, normally Saturday evenings is a late one for me so the quickest easiest route to Salisbury floats my boat. I end up doing around 320 miles for the day of which 60-80 miles is offroad at Salisbury and you end up well knackered by the end of the day.

Salisbury Plain's scheduled for the 13th November, yeah?

Don't want to miss it, I'm really looking forward to a Plain day!

Not the 20th as posted on the front page?

Just so I can get my day release form filled in by the powers that be!!

Did I mention that I'm really looking forward to it! :D

Well went up to the plains yesterday, had a great ride until we were stopped by the wardens and the police, that in it's self was not to bad but it was the fact that we had ridden straight into the middle of 40 commando doing manurvers. Nice boys all had green faces and big guns.

Joking apart we were ridding up and down the tank hill climbing area.

So be warned keep to the correct tracks or your name and document details will be taken.

Oh go on then, you've twisted my arm. I was in two minds about joining you lot after the cleaning bill last time (3 goes on separate occasions with a power washer and me bike still ain't gleaming!). Will just have to accept that my once gleaming bike will never be the same! The missus wasn't too chuffed with me using the bath as a wash tub for my clothing either.

However the fun-to-hassle ratio remains in favour, and I need to give my new TKC 80's a decent trial run so count me in!

May need someone to pick the bike up off me again tho'...... Colin, d'ya hear?!

:D

Chad
24-10-05, 07:42 PM

Colin
25-10-05, 09:11 AM
Well I going to whimp out of taking the AT on the 13th, I will pop along on the DR400, it's more nibble and I can hide behind smaller trees if our friends green and blue come looking for us.

I think we keep to the centre and east of the plain away from the tank range. Everyone seems to head for the tank range so probably best if we keep away.

Also, how long is it going to take - this is important, since the days are shorter and I'm coming all the way from London.

Your Best Bet is the Countess Services on the A303.
Basically Take the M3, then the A303 and keep going until you come to a roundabout. Go around the roundabout, and double back on yourself. 20 Meters off the roundabout, London Bound is the services.

WAIT !!!>>>> Just realised. Isn't Sunday 13th Remembrance Sunday ?

A lot of the towns will be shut off for the mornings. There will also be diversions around the various Army Barracks / Cenotaphs.

Most of the Army will also be off the plain too

Lord Stig
04-11-05, 03:29 PM
Good point! It is then that we shall instigate our invasion. With the Army, Air Force and Navy occupied the whole of the United Kingdom shall be ours! Until we get stuck in that mud...

Sounds like you guys want some insider info on where/when you can go on the Plain..?

I'm on the brink of buying my first bike, which I plan make an AT, and I live on the edge of the Plain, so in the future I hope to join you. If the land warden/modplod are a problem I can probably find the info you might want to know about access on specific days.

If you do, just ask

Looks like I won't be able to make it after all - I have a job interview the next morning. Apart from needing to get prepared I can't risk damaging my only form of transport so soon before I need it....

Sorry about that - I was really looking forward to this.

I'm still planning to join this little venture for my first trip off road.
I got Caveman to fit crash bars and I've some bark busters coming so that when I drop it - note the confidence I have (not if) - I won't do quite so much damage.
My plan is to remove the Baglux tank cover - it is so pretty and clean - and the top box - it's so ugly - and just strap on some lunch and hope for the best.
Anything else required/suggested?

BIke looks as if it isnt going to be ready.
I need to catch up with Roy to get the front subframe, and It appears when I removed the tank, I snalled a small "y" pieve off the breather system. The part is on back order from my local Honda dealer, and its not going to be in stock until saturday morning.

Having said that, the rest of the bike is back together. !

Right then the definitive list that I think anyone will need coming on Sunday.

Expect to absolutely covered in mud so.....
Old bike gear.
Waterproof gear would help as well as you'll get wet.
You also need to be warm, I think that's very important.
A change of socks, and possibly gloves might be in order as well if you get too wet.

Some food and a drink.

Personally I would leave the top box and panniers behind.

We'll probably set off around 10:30 by the time we get going, and you can peel off when you've had enough, but we'll probably pack up around 15:00 so that people can get back in the light. We'll have plenty of breaks along the ride for us to take a rest.

If you're not used to riding off-road let one of the regulars know and we'll pass on some tips, such as getting used to standing up when riding to lower your centre of gravity. I really do think riding off-road sharpens up your on-road skills.

I've only ever been on The Plain on 4 wheels, and I'm looking forward to passing my test and getting out there on two.

I'm also wondering if there'd be interest in overnighting on The Plain? Camping for those that want to, and travel lodges for those that don't.

Obviously summer would be the better option.
