    mp3 player instillation.

Sorry guys I know this has been discussed but the mean old search tool wont let me search for it..

The search term you specified (mp3) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.
how the bloody hel... grumble grumble..

So has any one installed (and powered) an MP3 player in a semi permanent kinda way..
Mrs.X and I are moving out of Brum and I get to start riding to work (i have never been happy about the idea of a commute before ). So I figured it would be nice to install music on to the bike.. but it would be nice to have it in such a way that it is secure and not in my pocket..
    anyone?

I just have the audio lead from my Starcom run up to my handlebars and I pop the MP3 in the handlebar bag and plug it in. I also have a 12v Socket on the bars too so if it needs juice I can plug that in too. If it's really raining hard then it can go inside a little ziplock plastic bag with a tiny hole for the lead.

Technically I suppose you could have an ignition switched 12v socket under the seat with a USB adapter in it and keep the player and everything under there in some sort of watertight box/bag. If your MP3 player is like mine then it'll automatically power up when connected to a 12v source
    - ie when you turn the ignition key. Suppose it'd then stay on until it ran out of juice, but that wouldn't matter as you're constantly hooked up to power.

    Is it legal.
A friend of mine said only if you have it in one ear?

I have my ipod mounted on my bars in an Otterbox (Armour Series) - fully waterproof, easily unclips when off the bike as Ram Mount do a specific mount for Otterboxes. Never once has it leaked any water or malfunctioned - plumbed into my Autocom.

    Re: mp3 player instillation.

    hello Xander

I have tried lots of ways, the best i think is have the MP3 mounted on the plastic air filter cover on the tank using velcro, but i have a proper bracket (i made from carbonfibre) fitted on the blackbird handlebars at the moment.

I have also tried sat nav units with MP3 ability but the light from the screen is a pain in the rain at night.
So at the moment i have just got all the bits to allow me to mount an SD card reader/player under the seat and have just a set of waterproof buttons mounted on the side of the fairing with a straight link to the autocom all out of harms way, this will allow 4GB of music to be ready at any time(and i carry spare cards anyway).

as an aside i have just made a lead to allow pluging the MP3 jack straight into the autocom lead to the helmet, this means you don't have the mic cutting in from time to time (road noise sneezing etc, or singing too loud)
and the quality without the Autocom in the loop is far better !!

I use an Aqua Quest dry bag. I think mine is the PDA protector but that is because I have an iRiver that is quite think. When I switch to an iPod I may fit a smaller bag.
There are plastic seals, then a fold over velcro fastening then it folds over again and velcros. I put the cable to the volume control one and feed that out then seal and fold around it. I then plug into the Starcom lead, whcih I leave sticking out the front of the seat.
I stick it right in front of me on the tank. I have traditonally use a cargo net over the tank and two straps of that have done the trick, but I will switch to a simple bit of velcro.
Have ridden for five hours in solid rain from Newcastle home to SE London and on many other rainy trips and it has never let a drop of water in.

Crinch. I think it might be a little different to ear plugs.
I think the highway code recomends Ear plugs on long journies to protect our ears.

But no recolection of it mensioning Music.

I would work on the basis of you can crank it up in a car to a level were you deaffen the third world, so why not on a bike.

    Cheers,

Only drawback with this is the fact that some Ipod's have a hard drive and don't like vibration. Mine and a lot of others on the GS site seize and eventually die. Great system though. My ipod is a 30gb video the smaller ones have a flash memory and should be ok.
