    Autocom Interference

I have an annoying problem with my Autocom.

It is the Active Rider 200 kit.

Basically I think I have a loose connection or poor connection somewhere in the system.

It is hard wired to the bike, fitted under the seat with my cable running up between the seat and tank and pillion running under the seat and out by the exhaust but not close enough to get hot.

We have the straight headset extension leads then connected to the helmets.

All has worked fine for 10 months but the last few times the sound comes and goes.

Say the music is on all is well then I hit a bump in the road and I loose the sound in one ear, I get horrible crackling noise and sometimes can loose it all together.

It is not the VOX for sure.

If I have the ignition on and then connect the pillion lead it nearly blows your head off with an electrical noise.

Yesterday I went to the local dealer and tried a different headset different leads and still the same.

It seems to point and the connections that are left exposed when they are not in use, the ones you plug the helmet leads into,

Is there any thing to clean these with ? I dont want to just spray WD40 on them if its not the right thing to do

Please help as its doing my head in LITERALLY

    Cheers in advance

Start at the beginning and check the connection to the battery. you can get a spray can of contact cleaner for the plugs but I would guess at the connections to the battery is the cure.

    Thanks Stumpy

But when I get the loss of sound it it in one ear and then if I mess with the extension connector it comes back.

So should I get some contact cleaner and spray that on ?

I had a similar problem which cleared up when I replaced the earth.
A spray of contact cleaner on the plugs will not hurt.

    Re: Autocom Interference

Autocom should have some new securing clips out by now - they are the same as the stick-on 'P' clips the set comes with the secure the audio lead from the unit to where you want them sited to plug into, but they come with a cap to cover the end of the lead when its not used - I've been meaning to get some for ages - they are in the latest catalogue, Item 2425 at £4 each, but when I rang them last month they didnt have them in stock yet - should have by now though...........

You've reminded me to e-mail them and see if they are in stock yet - well done.............

    Re: Autocom Interference

Sprayed everything with contact cleaner and checked the earth, and the problem still persists

But I have narrowed it down to the lead from the unit to the riders helmet.

When I wiggle it about on the lead end and not the extension end it is crackling and cutting out.

So looks like there must be a broken wire in the lead, so a new one will be ordered in the morning

    Re: Autocom Interference

    yeah,
the thinner headset wires are really fragile, like any headphone wires, and if youve caught them in something, bent them too sharply or even just yanked the jackplug out too hard you could have broken a few strands.
and its more likely to be a wire that gets disturbed all the time than one that is on the bike permanently and never gets moved.

    Re: Autocom Interference

Yep sounds just like mine. I have been using the pillion lead for months now as my rider lead/connector to the autocom unit rather than the extension is goosed. Been meaning to send it back for new lead/connector for ages but never got round to it.

Mine went the same way with loud crackling and loss in one ear or both. Simple job to solder new plug on but hoping if I send it back they will just change the whole lead back to the unit.

That has happened to my Ultimate ear plugs they only play through one ear on the extension lead but work perfectly hen directly fitted to an i-pod.
