exhaust stud removal?

Hi,

I am currently upgrading the front pipes on my Dommi to Stainless pipes from ABP in Germany. I have removed all but one stud that has snapped about 10mm from the head!
Does any body have a tool or method they would recomend for getting this stud out as there isn't a lot of room to work in and i dont really want to take the head off.............?

Re: exhaust stud removal?

The normal technique for removing stubborn studs goes like this:

Screw a nut onto the stud followed by another. Screw the 2 nuts together to lock them into place. Undo the stud by unscrewing the nut closest to the head (this nut will not turn on the stud because it is locked so the stud will unscrew)

You may have trouble because of the lack of exposed thread but if you can get a couple of thin nuts it should be possible. Good luck.

Re: exhaust stud removal?

These studs are M6 if I remember correctly. If you have got enough thread to do the two nuts trick then great. Before you do it, repeatedly soak the stud with Plus-Gas. If it doesn't feel like it's going to budge, get a blowtorch on the head around the stud and get some heat into it. Switch off the blowtorch, give a quick spray onto the stud and try again.

Often, the stud will just snap between thee nuts (ooer) and you then need to try something else. I've seen nuts welded to studs to get them out. Don't use stud extractors 'cos they are bad news when (not if) they break off in the stud. If it absolutely refuses to budge, drilling it out is the final option.
