XL125V (06) Newbie's first oil change

Based on other fourm info. I'm planning to use Halfords 10w40 semi-synth for my first oil change (at 800 miles since purchase and 7500 service).

Questions therefore are.... what oil filter do I need (a link to where to buy would be cool) and what tool do I need for it's installation? Oh and any recommended torque wrenches....?

It's my first ever motorbike and first ever oil change....

I don't want much.....!

Hey Toxster

Your oil should be okay, there's been plenty of discussion on which oil to use on here.

Try David Silver Spares for your oil filter -

David Silver Spares - PARTS

Oh, and you'll want a new alloy washer for the drain bolt too. I don't see it listed, but I think the one you need is part no: 9410914000. But best to check.

Torque wrenches? Halfords Pro range appear to be recommended.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Great answer thanks. Filter and nut & washer duly ordered.

Cheers.

Re: XL125V (06) Newbie's first oil change

Finally did it. 1700 miles after it's last (alleged) service.

Fitted new bolt and washer and changed the filter. Oil was Motul 10/40 semi. Bits from David silver - as suggested here (thanks).

Oh my, what a difference. I have a new bike.....

It no longer needs choke and idle fiddling to start - it starts first time no choke, no idle increase. The gears change so easily it's like I have a tight new gearbox....

Also tightened the chain and there is no more slapping/lurching when changing... power transfer is unbelievably smooth. Also took a bit of slack out of the clutch cable. It hasn't ridden this well - ever.

It's a new bike all round. Chain is now beyond its limiter though, so new one due at next service.

Will now change the oil every 600 miles (once a month)... lesson learned.

Still sounds a tad breathy but maybe carb balancing will help that (need to wait till the fuel tank isn't so full so I can lift it).

Thanks for the advice.
