Snapped the bloody key in my givi top box!
snapped the bloody key in my givi top box, the end of the key is stuck in the lock, the main bit of the key can still turn the lock, its seems to lock but after 5 minutes on the bike the flap un-latches. whats the chance of getting another key? or would it be easier and CHEAPER just to use a bungy cord to keep it shut? cheers |

Re: Snapped the bloody key in my givi top box!
If you can't get the old bit of key out, you can buy a new lock from a Givi supplier. It may be worth taking the lock out and handing it over to a decent key cutter/locksmith to have a play with it.
Edit: Doh! Beaten to it!

Re: Snapped the bloody key in my givi top box!
For some reason the keys supplied with Givi stuff are weak and flimsy and made out of monkey-metal. I had one snap off too, but i got it out with pliers. Then took my spare to a key cutter and had two new copy keys made up. The spare went back in the "safe place" with the registration docs and bike spare key, and the copies are the ones I use every day. And they don't snap.
So to all givi owners I say this: get a copy made and use it every day, put your red Givi key away. |

Re: Snapped the bloody key in my givi top box!
What is the key number stamped on it?
I have a whole host of redundant keys and there is a chance (all be it a small one!) that I may have one. The locks and barrels are remarkably easy to change/remove on givi boxes even if the box is locked so drop me a line if you wish to know how to do it all. I think I may even have some spare barrels and keys if you don't mind not having a full set on one key for the time being.

Re: Snapped the bloody key in my givi top box!
theres just a pin holding the lock in the box, remove it and the lock easily comes out. these locks are very basic and easy to strip yourself if you cant get the bit of key out. BUT- the small plates that come out- you must remember the order they go back in because each one is different to match up with the bumps on the key, so obviousy it wont work if you dont!
there are probably only five or six different plates, that go in any order of four places (if i remember right) so that gives givi plenty of different combinations. the keys are basic locker keys, you can get a copy cut anywhere and the copies will be flat so they fit in you wallet nicely as a spare. its not a major problem, youre lucky you can get the box off and the box isnt stuck locked to the bike!

Re: Snapped the bloody key in my givi top box!
I had a pair of panniers that came with a bike, and one pannier had a broken key stub in the lock. It took 2 minutes to take off the barrel and poke the stub out from the back of the lock with a watchmaker's screwdriver. I then got a spare cut in case the remaining key broke. Give it a go!
