    Re: Getting a BMW?

yeah, that was me I found a little circuit only a couple of miles away that had a greenlane cut-through, a b-road and a slower dual carriage way and did some circuits. Great fun and rather muddy!

It looked a lot better than the KTM I returned that morning - I took it from Hemel Hempstead, drove up past Berkhamstead and found a offroad spot where I actually managed to get the bike stuck in some dark woods in a huge pool caused by a flooded set of tractor tracks. With noone around to help, I spent 15 minutes balancing the bike whilst pulling lumps of wood from under the bashplate, up to my knees, and eventually managed to get the bike out and back to the dealer. That will teach me!

That means it is very much loved.

As for a few scratches and missing stickers. It is an ADVENTURE bike. It's designed to go anywhere and do anything. Doing that you won't get pristine bodywork. It doesn't detract from the bike.

all bikes have their little querks itsm how you deal with the problems that makes it a good bike such as, @'s fuel pumps, output shafts. KTM's overheating, clutch and fueling faults. Beemmers GS1100 boomb proof ,GS1150 again top of the evolution tree, GS1200 the early models as with any new models has had its electrical faults this is down to the CanBus system and faulty gear box seals, rear swing arm snapping off, diffs breaking up. the late 2007 and the new 2008 1200 models are not suffering with the earlier faults. I have had my GS 1150 for 5 years and had the chance of a new KTM but the next bike I will be going for is GSA 1200 2008 vintage in a few years

I did the same thing before I got mine (looks like the same demo bike too ) I took it back with mud on the screen (prob same lanes in Berko ) they just looked at it and said "Been having fun "

    " Err, Yep "

The guys at Hemel are superb tho. .

BMW R1200RT. Dealer told me it can run on 95 RON for brief periods but they are not advising that as common practice. Based in Italy at the moment, worst fuel in Europe together with France...

Varadero. Tried every single version from the original carb-fuelled bike to the latest model and hated every single one of them. I am not saying anything more at the moment.

KTM. They are not getting a penny from me. Ever.

Back to the 1150GS, it didn't look like an adventure bike to me but one which has just been abused. In my opinion it never saw as much as a puddle of mud. They also had a very good looking R1200GS Adventure but it had already been sold. What a shame. But as they say there's plenty of fish swimming in the ocean.

I am also considering, and that's highly unusual for me, a brand new production bike but if that will be the case I'll wait until the end of the year. Bike market in free fall down here and dealers will get desperate for a sale...

    Re: Getting a BMW?

You may want to consider a Tiger as well.

I can't say much about their off-road pedigree compared to the GS (as I've driven neither off-road) but you can't beat them for long range touring.

Service intervals are also very good, 6,000 miles between services, with every 2nd service being the biggie (checking valve clearances, etc).

Don't know if they're easy to come by in Italy though.

    Gone but not forgotten:
'04 Tiger (MRA-Vario screen, Crash bars, K&N Airfilter, dual headlamp upgrade. Colour: orange, 'cause I'm Dutch, innit!)
