My brother was convinced he wanted a KTM 690, then he rode one and the power delivery was just too mental to enjoy.

No ride it first, not sure what your used to riding but it is completely different to what I'd ridden before. There's nothing worse than buying a bike then realising a few weeks later you absolutely hate it. Give yourself the chance to find out before you part with the cash.
I would have bought the XT660 and to be honest almost never rode it because I loved the look so much and the dealer made it sound ideal for me, I didn't even get it out of the car park before I realised how much I would have hated to be stuck with it and that it was definitely not the bike for me
