In an attempt to uphold my position as purveyor of lucky white biker heather on the site I appear to have killed a second BMW. Good news I imagine for some of you but a bit frustrating for me - not least because it stuffs my plans to ride around the Highlands following a mobile cinema next week.
I will let PD explain:
" Gentlemen,
I bring you bad news of Roslyn's bike. Fresh from having tried to kill everyone who tried to ride it, it then got a stuck float valve dumped down the bore for about 60 miles thereby washing all the oil away, so that - according to the garage - the bike now needs new rings. For good measure, the rear brake is jiggered too.
I have not seen it running since Sunday night so don't know if it is smoking, and I don't have a compression tester to check it. Assuming the garage is right though, Roslyn would rather not pay for ten hours' labour before even finding out if the bore is shot.
The proposal is to get it out of the garage and into storage.
Is there anyone on this thread or elsewhere who's prepared to check the compression, and if it is unacceptably low, take the engine apart, inspect it and see if it can be fixed? Ros'd help out and learn and probably stand lots of beer. "
To answer his questions - it was smoking and there was no compression and yes I would stand lots of beer.
The latest suggestion is to buy a new engine and I am feeling a little overwhelmed, given I am hanging on by my fingertips in my understanding of the technical aspects of what is going on and what it means. I've found a 2000 engine with 4300 miles on it for £550 on M1 Salvage & Breakers - thanks to Rog - and would welcome comments on the merits of this plan versus (someone) dismantling and rebuilding the original.
If it helps I promise not to go anywhere near bikes belonging to anyone who offers to help, as bits will inevitably start falling off or exploding just because I am in the vicinity.
For what it is worth I also still think the offroad fun (if admittedly not financially) was worth it. Thanks in anticipation of continued XRV chivalr -ous-ness-ivity.
