    F650gs flat spot

    hi all.
My wife has just purchased a f650gs. Not ridden for 8 years but has the bug again. We met a group last summer called Birds on bikes and she sat on a gs and you can guess the rest.

The problem is a missfire. When opening the throttle it misses then picks up. It is better when warm but still misses. You can notice it when doing about 30 to 40 mph. the bike runs fine when throttle is opend up past the flat spot.

The bike is on a 53 plate. 14000 miles. fuel injection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Rob.

Not too up on FI, but I would consider checking and changing the air filter.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: F650gs flat spot

My wife has a f650gs with fuel injection, hers suffered with a similar problem,a few questions, does it stall at tickover when warm?,tickover should be 1500 ish rpm is it?,do the instruments move in a funny way or stop working(if only for a moment).
If it stalls or the tickover is considerably higher than 1500 it sounds like the f.i pot needs resetting. It is simple to do turn on the ignition(do not push starter button),open the throttle to its fullest position and close it(do it slowly and smoothly about 2 seconds each way)repeat open and close procedure 2 more times, turn off ignition and wait for 5 minutes,
Turn on ignition and push starter until it fires, note( and this is important)
DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE UNTIL THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AT ANYTIME as it tells the f.i pot where tickover is and any movement of the throttle will move the pot and tell lies to the engine mangement system.Check the battery terminals as they vibrate lose after about 4000 miles.
Finally change the plug or plugs for Iridium type as they improve smoothness, starting and economy.
Also check out this site BMW F650 (UK)as the information on there for these bikes is exhaustive
    Hope this helps

    Re: F650gs flat spot

    Hi.
    Thanks for the info.
The bike starts and ticks over ok. Have changed plug and air filter.
I will have a go at reseting the pot as the throttle has been moved whilst starting loads of times. The dealer was ringing its neck trying to start it.

I will go and try it right now.

    Many thanks.

    Rob.....
