Take legal advice, then Trading standards, mcn, ride magazine, BMW Germany, and every single forum you can.......

I would see if you can get an independant engineer to see what their view is.....

    keep at them though Pete.

How many Final Drives has it had,

and how many would it normally be expected to have had?

I'm thinking that if there's nothing wrong with the final drives then there's something wrong with the bike and they're just fixing the symptoms each time...thus the fault re-occurs( Sorry if I'm stating the obvious).

I'll pass the info on to my Nephew who is a Trading Standards Officer....see what he thinks.

Have you tried taking it to Buckingham Palace and asking for your money back ?...

I thought shaft drives were meant to be cheaper than Chain and Sprockets, as in not needing replacing.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

You're thinking of the 1970s and 80s. The 90s and err.... 0ees is a whole different kettle of worms.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Sorry Pete,

Really feel for you - honest I do

Are you sure that there is not a problem with your alignment - just seems too much that the final drive should fail so many times

    Sorry - I'll do that again ---

Chad -- Do you think that the alignment is out ??
Has the bike been dropped or has had a sideways shunt ??
    Just doesn't add up

Please have a look at the alignment on ZER PANZER before the old duffer cracks up

    Re: Vader's final drive woes

    Surely, in simple terms a final drive consists of;
A shaft with a bevel gear driving another bevel gear and shaft which turns the wheel, supported by a couple of bearings & shimmed up to give the correct backlash/tolerance?

Assuming that out of the 3 or 4 rebuilds, some, if not all must have been done correctly, that only leaves a machining/alignment problem???

What actually happens when the final drive fails - does the rear wheel wobble & lose oil indicating a bearing failure or do you get a course, rough sound indicating gear wear.

Really hope that you get sorted Pete - don't let the B**tards grind ya down.

From what I understand the first signs are the ABS failure light comes on and the speedo goes erratic due to the ABS sensor getting covered in bits of cack from the failing final drive.

I know it must be a complete pain in the arse. And the wallet. Time for a change of bike I think.

When I was a gear shop Inspector at Hawker Siddley Diesels we produced bevel gear sets. The only way to pair them up was to run a couple in a jig and when they were running silently they were matched as a pair.
