    Lost Oil

Fellow Wolves, is this normal ?, the GS was serviced at 15,572 miles just before TLD, it has now got just under 18k on the clock. On checking the glass thingy, the oil level is just above the bottom of the red circle. I obviously need to top it up, but how much or do I just keep filling until the glass thingy is full, and what oil ? ddiolch 'ch, merci, grazie

sorry not one of the wolves ( one of the vara mob ) just wondering, are you checking it on the centre stand as if on side stand my vara oil level totally vanishes, giving a worryingly empty reading. cheers Ade

    Re: Lost Oil

it's air cooled so will use some oil.

the instructions I found for the 1150gs were.

run it to temp (at least 3 bars on the temp gauge)

put it on the side stand for 15 mins to let the oil drain from the cooler

put it on the main stand and check the level after a few mins, then top up till the oil level is at the top of the red circle in the sight glass.

from the top of the circle to the bottom is half a litre

I'm told 20w50 is good for the 1150 (soaks up some of the rattles )

    Re: Lost Oil

Ok I did what Wolf Porter suggested and the oil level has risen to half way in the sight glass, so I guess i need about a quarter of a litre, going by his calculations ?

    Re: Lost Oil

that's exactly what mine was like last week,

and yes about 1/4 litre should do it.

I use THIS from Opie using the XRV discount of course

doesn't have to be motorcycle oil as it's a dry clutch but the above stuff meets the BMW spec.

    Re: Lost Oil

Depends on what oil you use as well.
I put more than 30k on my 850GS. I did have to do the occasional top up, but cannot remember how often.
BMs have always used some oil.
I always use, except in airheads, Castrol Actevo. I used this in my GS and most of my four strokes including my Transalp.
Locating neutral can sometimes be difficult on my Alp, but I know the oil is good and I'll stick with it.

Yes, your bike should be on centre stand and as long as it is above the bottom of the red mark, you're okay, but why risk it, get it to at least half way; I used to have mine nearer to the top mark - NOT OVER IT
