i like that its a real pretty bike![]()
Despacio. Hay m'as tiempo que vida
I have an R80GS (it's for sale) it's a 1990 one mint but the one in this picture has a different exhaust to mine - mine is a high level. one![]()
2000 Black and Gold with MRA Screen, Motad Venon Exhaust + Custom Stainless Ankle Guard, Bagster Tank Cover, Dash Clock Cover + 12V, Facet Fuel Pump, Givi Crash Bars, Givi Pannier Rack (Modified for Stahlkoffers), Givi Top Box, Stahlkoffer Panniers, Pro. Mod. Seat, CR Footpegs, Michelin Anakee 2 Tyres, Sat Nav., Hel Stainless Brake Hoses, K&N, Headlamp Mesh - oh! yes. Huge Nut attached to Handle Bars
Not yet it is.
But it will be. Me mate bought his first bike ever last winter, a 1975 R90/6.
Fixed it up in a small shed without heat and only one light bulb.
The found this R80G/S sadly in a somewhat sorry state, repainted and missing most of the original exhaust system.
But it's a genuine PD and not an ordinary G/S with added PD parts, and with a known history, being the Swedish BMW importers test bike, and first owner after BMW, was the Editor for a Swedish Motorcycle magazine. My mate Axel is owner number 4.
I think he will (with my help) repaint it quite soon in OEM white with proper stickers.
Must find a long seat for it 'cause his wife begs to come riding with him...
Anyway, I will keep You all posted when and if any major repairs or overhauls is made.
I must say that although it's an old bike it still pulls strong, and it's surprisingly nimble. Brakes are just short of being permanent ABS stoppies.
I guess they just need a good service and a set of new brakelines.

If I'm not mistaken the old G/S came standard with a second set of caliper mounts on the left fork leg. (Something sorely missed on the later GSes.) Adding a second disc should sort him out for a while, if that's not enough there's 320mm discs and adapters (though I'm not sure they do a left-handed one), next stop from that is worrying about bending the rather spindly forks.
But, yeah. ABS brakes came standard on the GS and G/S. No idea what all the fuss in four-valve land is about.![]()

Yeah conversions are out there, occasionally a converted left fork leg shows up on ebay, but they always go for silly money. I wouldn't mind one, even though the 320mm disc makes for acceptable stopping power compared to the original piddly little thing. Came in useful a few times, too.
Incidentally, I spotted some brand new Marzocchi inserts for the original 80/100GS forks on ebay, going for over 1000 euro. Bloody hell, some people spend far too much on these things, one kilo-euro will go a long way towards a big fat UPSD conversion.
That is one tidy looking Dakar though.
