    Homemade Fenda-Extenda

None of the usual suspects Powerbronze , Pyramid etc seem to do front mudguard extensions for the Transalp 650 so I bodged my own.

    What you need

    1)Cornflake packet - to make a template
2)Suitable plastic - I used a 20 litre Castrol oil drum , scrounged from the crew of my local ferry !!!
3)A couple of repair washers - to spread the load.
    4) Spray paint - as required

    Method

    Shape the template from cardboard.

Lay the template flat and draw round it on the plastic

    Cut out the plastic.

Shape the plastic using boiling water

    Spray to match

Drill holes and mount using repair washers to spread the load and avoid localised stress cracks in the mudguard.

Finished - not the prettiest fenda extenta you ever saw - but it works.

And I was so pleased with the one I made for the Transalp , that I made a MK2 version for the KTM ,

    Nice one Jack.

Used a similar technique for a rear mudguard replacement on an XS400 "rat" many moons ago. Nowhere near as tidy a job as yours though!

Reckon I might as well - I'm getting sick of having to hose road salt of my bash guard every time I go anywhere - i.e. most days.............

why do they continually make front huggers so short? its obvious whats going to happen, and its not always a "buy our accessories sir" thing because most manufacturers dont even do an extender as an accessory!

you should see how short my mates hornet hugger is, its a joke! with the radiator right behind it too.
my varadero's not too bad but theres still a 3" gap between the bottom of the hugger and the top of the belly pan with a nice inviting section of exhaust pipe exposed to all the crud.
on all my bikes so far i usually take the hugger off, lay up some carbon fibre on the inside, then shape an extension piece from it that i know will fit to the hugger profile perfectly. i then rivet this on the bottom lip.
this works for rear huggers too, if you got one that doesnt cover the lower shock linkage underneath the swingarm you can extend the hugger through the swingarm and extend it down a bit.

I think Transalp 650 has a better design than the Varadero in terms of blocking **** off engine and rear shock.

The alp has a white rear mud flap which does the trick pretty good and belly pan keeps your engine clean.

The rear shock on the Vara is completely exposed and belly pan should really extend a bit further up on front.
