Easy assembly of Honda throttle twist grip

For those of you that have struggled assembling the throttle twist grip assembly you will know that inserting the little nylon guide can be quite a PITA.

I tried Yens suggestion of removing it all together but didn't like the 'hacksawing' feeling of the cable grinding on the alloy housing, through the grip.

Plan B - cut the lower part from the nylon guide, about 8 -10 mm is sufficient.

Refitting the guide is much easier as it easily slides past the 'pull' cable and doesn't need to be worked past the 'push' cable.

The twist grip assemble can now be tightened fully without giving the usual sticky throttle and a nice smooth throttle action is maintained as the pull cable is riding on the remaining nylon guide.

I have done about 9k with it like this and all is fine.

There's no need to modify the nylon insert. The 'push' cable (the one located at the bottom of the nylon insert) needs to be located to the side of the insert for the throttle return to snap shut. What tends to happen is for the 'push' cable to get trapped under the insert....the more you tighten the throttle housing the stiffer the return gets.
The best way to get the push cable correctly located to the side of the nylon insert is to disconnect it at the carb end, i.e. slacken the adjuster nut and remove it from the circular push/pull wheel located on the carb. Then get the push cable correctly located (which is easy since it now has loads of slack) and properly tigthen the throttle housing screws. Then refit the cable at the carb end.

Hi, I've just been struggling with this also. Need to get my @ MOTed tomorrow and I haven't really got time to take the tank off before then. I've gone with the option of removing the guide at least for the MOT.

There's no need to modify the nylon insert. The 'push' cable (the one located at the bottom of the nylon insert) needs to be located to the side of the insert for the throttle return to snap shut
When you say the cable needs to go "to the side" of the nylon insert, you mean the outside of it, the side furthest from the centre of the handlebars, nearest the right hand bar end when you're sitting on the bike don't you??

When I took it to bits I couldn't tell which side the push cable was supposed to go.

Seconded. It took me an hour of misery on my RD04 to suss that one out. By contrast, it took me just 2 minutes to get the twistgrip assembly back together on the TA by popping the push cable off.
