    Re: alu panniers

Just to finish this off, after finding these Pioneer Boxes on fleabay.de I made up a bracket and bolted them on, initially the bracket was to swivel at the top for quick release, but I was worried that it might quick release on the Autobahn, so they are now bolted fairly permenantly one of 8 bolts have to be removed then option 1 works again.

the panels were then finished off with alu sheeting, just for the looks,
I just hope they stay on when cornering

Judging by the looks, they seem to come from the Bundeswehr, or possibly they are
Swiss Army pioneer boxes made from HDPE.

Since Pioneers would be the guys with tools and explosives digging and blowing things up, the boxes would most likely be full of tools, or
    similary equipment.

German ebay are full of boxes in alu or GFK

    Re: alu panniers

They are Swiss Army, and anything too big for the pockets gets stuffed into these, they have no specific use.
I've not found the manufacturer yet but being HDPE (plastic) they will lose their softening agents with time and become brittle but at 30 bucks I cant ask for a lifetime warranty.
The GRP boxes on ebay did look appealing but they are heavy, my boxes are a tad over 5 Kg, I took the bike out for a quick spin and they held up very good, they were empty but didn't catch the wind, I don't plan to go off road, or ride the silk route but I will load them up and see how they fair up, I need to carry about 15Kg per box so I'll wait and see.

    Re: alu panniers

Had to dig to find my own post.
I thought I'd do an update 2 years down the line, I've lost 1 lid and had to source another and now they are on a tether.
I dropped the bike once and it was thrown over on the ferry once, both times landing on the RHS.
I've been through some pretty torrential rain and through dust from gravel roads, with nothing getting in.
They have been over loaded and only make the bike unstable above the ton (autobahns).
I've caught the pegs and have a gnats knacker spare before they catch.
Over all I am bloody chuffed to bits with them, the best €30 odd euros ever spent for the bike. I keep looking on ebay just in case more come up.
    10 out of 10

and now with a battle scar or two and loadsa stickers I'm even happier

    Re: alu panniers

maybe a redundant post by now but it might help someone in the future.....

(kjell, what happened to porco rosso?)

ive just been to the local angling store for my annual revamp of line and tackle (£140, J. bleedin Christ!) and noticed they had a useful looking lot of plastic coated braided dogfish/shark line and crimps, this mated to large snaps would make just about any tie you would want.
(personally i would use paracord, ive always got a hank carried with the camping gear for guy lines or boot laces etc. its very strong, you can redo it easily and seal the knots with a lighter)
