    Re: make own Panniers

i had to do all that calculus cobblers when i worked at a boatyard making up fuel tanks, we used it primarily as a way of getting the biggest tank out of a single sheet of metal, or the largest volume in the smallest physical size, which i think in a roundabout way is what this guys doing.

its been 20yrs so i cant do it anymore, but i do remember that to find the volume of the tank (had to be certified, see) it was quicker to fill it with water and empty it out litre by litre than it was to work it out with a calculator

Unfortunately, while mathematics may be his/her/its strong point, spelling perhaps isn't.

I spent hours and hours doing calculus at university, and I loved it. There isn't much call for it in my current job.

I quite liked it too.. but once met a tin-smith ( few years ago, they are still about as they cut and roll the stainless steel sheeting that covers the insulation on pipes in heavy industry ), anyway.. he had allsorts of interesting mathmatical geometrical tricks for making cones and reducers and spiral bends from flatsheet... but when confronted about how good his maths was, was ademant that he was as thick as pig ****!!... real nice bloke too.. ho hum lost skills......

my sellink is ****e too.. that must make me a doctor then

What are you lot all griping about? Seemed simple enough to me.... you just measure angle aa and length W, then you divide by 4 ..err, or is that multiply by the second hand on your watch ? ... and...ummm.... errr... nip onto fleabay and buy a couple of those handy ex military ammo boxes.

How are you making the rack to fit to the bike as my brother in law is a welder fabricator and has agreed to make me a set of panniers and rack

was going to use galvanized steel for the boxes so it was water tight and can be painted to match the bike. the only prob we have is how to make the rack and fit it to the bike

    Thanks Derek
