    Home-made side cases (panniers)

Hi there, it's been about 2 months from the moment I eventually decided to make my own panniers for my TA, since none of the existing ones suited my requirements (they're bloody expensive!), besides, I love to make things and to recycle existing objects to give them a second life.

I reckon that some pictures of the process will speak better than me, so here they go:

Álbumes web de Picasa - veodoble - Mis terapias:...

They hold 40 liters, about 8 gallons, and they're pretty watertight. Overall weight is about 10 kgs, (3,5 to 4 each jerrrycan I reckon), and total cost around 40 .

Feel free to suggest any improvements.

    Cheers!

    They look very nice.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

They look great to me and very satisfying to have made them yourself. The only thing they need now is stickers from the places that you visit

They did not have any markings on them, like 1941 or simillary?
'Cause they look like original British "Jerry" cans from WWII

Hi Fabien! It is really nice to check that you are up again! Yes, I imagine that your business with the insurance company didn't progress as desired. Nevermind, you'll get a better AT and you'll build her up with your fine extras!

Things have changed here and we no longer have parking lot at our studio so it would have been difficult to have the corpse of your AT hanging around here. We'll talk if you have the chance to come back here, for a day or two at least, so we can catch up!

And Kjell, I'd like to track the origins of these 2 cans, I'll try to investigate by asking the guy that gave them to me. They were abandoned in a barn, along 2 more cans and a huge fuel reservoir, and they belonged to a man that used to drive tourists around in Algeria back in the seventies. He had (still has!!) a Land Rover and drove them here and there, so he needed larger fuel capacity. So for many years these jerrycans have been stored (eventually this guy retired) until I visited him and, as we were walking around his farm, I spotted the cans, asked him if he could give them, and the rest is written in the pictures you saw. He's pretty glad with the final use they now have as he appreciated them much. I reckon they're made of steel, and as far as I know they're not originally german as german cans had a different X-shape in the center. The top of the cans are Aluminium (now they're ashtrays ) and the upper side that I cut off are hangind on the wall like african masks, I'll post a pic of them since they look a lot like african!

So Kjell, you think they're british. I'll post any new findings when I'll know more.

    Cheers to you all, guys!
