    Tube bending

I want to make my own rack and need some advice from the pros
what sort of bender is up to the job I only want 15mm tubing so dont want to fork out hundreds just to play with once or twice
would this be strong enough (am I strong enough)

Or should I be looking looking at Hybollic or one of these on the second hand market

Get The cheapest one. The top one could be wedged between steps to give you better leverage.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Please, please, please dont go for these.
If you pay close attention, the pipe is copper. These wont bend steel. They're cheap because they're made of white metal(very cheap alloy) and they break under pressure.

I've got 2 of the basic model and one of them is broken for trying to bend ally pipe. There is no cheap way to bend steel. Second hand proper pipe bender is the way to go.

    Re: Tube bending

Once the tube is bent do you have the means to weld/braze it together? I'm a pretty handy sort of bloke but the last time I needed a carrier I got a Rentec one off evilbay for 20 quid. No outlay, fitted well and was robust. No real sence of achievment but an instant result. Weigh up the costs and what you save will pay for a day out.

Top one is for copper pipe
Bottom is conduit bender, that will do it, but even second hand ones are not cheap.

    Re: Tube bending

depends on the gauge of the tube, I use the top one with 15mm alloy tube as the dies in my hydraulic bender are to large

    Re: Tube bending

Its all for a project that I still dont know if it will work
I'm fitting VTR exhausts to the Varadero so they mount below the panniers, with loads of plastics cut away I can mount Alloy panniers narrower than the bars.
But I need to to make exhaust mounting brackets, and mounts for the tinker tins

I've got electric glue but cant stick alloy, I thought about making a copper template and asking a metal fabricator to make a steel copy but that seems longwinded and will probably cost more than if I get a bender

Try Protopipe in Coventry. Protopipe Tube Manipulation Contact Us They specialise in one-off pipe fabrication and bent and welded up some rectangles for pannier frames for our TA's for 40 beer tokens. Nice.

Have you thought of hiring a pipe bender?

    Re: Tube bending

Both of those benders will work with the correct wall thickness in seamless tubing (2mm+). The biggest problem you will have is the CLR (Centre Line Radius) will be large so you will end up with big corners.

I've just spent 180quid on a 5/8 x3CLR die set, for my Hydraulic Bender. But then my set up cost around 3k. you get what you pay for
