I think this is a very good idea, the smaller charities will benefit a lot more from the money.
It's `what` charities though... theres already been 2 mentioned and i'm sure there will be a lot more people giving reasons as to why the charity they favour should receive the money.
First year we raised over 15 grand, second year over 20 grand. We seem to be gaining more recruits for the rides each year so could we possibly top 30 grand and choose 3 charitites to receive 10 grand each?
Just a thought.
874 Miles in one day...need a bit of a rest first!
I like the smaller charities idea, however it's going to end up with a long list of deserving charities in lots of different localities which could cause a big headache.
Regards routes I feel we should look for something that doesn't involve ferries it should make the logistics easier.
PS I think this discussion should wait until June 23rd but that's just me.

Small charities: tick
Split charities is possible but complicated: cross
LEJOG: cross. Just too far, too boring, nothing in between
Cancer theme: cross. Two members of my immediate family have had cancer recently so it is not as if I have no interest in finding cures, but it's not a cause I particularly want to raise money for.
I'm disturbed by how many cancer charities there are, each with their individual administrations to fund. There's no doubt that those who work in them are honourably motivated but it is just not sensible to deal with a global problem in such a piecemeal way. The big ones are HUGE and they, together with the government and universities, are funding an enormous amount of research. It is just not true that cures are not forthcoming because of the lack of funding. Cures will certainly not come about quicker because a little local charity is funded for another year.
Not a popular observation perhaps, but true.
I think children are a winner: the idea appeals to each of us and is not difficult to raise money for. Make A Wish was a stroke of genius: a national charity, small in scale but doing something that no-one else is doing and with no overlap with government's functions. Anything that hits those three targets will get my vote. The national organisation of children's contact centres (where parents who have split up can see their kids) appeals but is not well known, but I'll take any other suggestions.

I agree with PDSquire, although Cancer charities are a worthwhile cause the shear number of them seems to be defeating the object.
Make a Wish is a charity that does not seem to get the recognition it deserves, it does not spend as much of it money on advertising.
It is also for children, always a winner in the eyes of most people.
Help for heroes is also a cause that seems to be overlooked by the mainstream because we foolishly believe the powers that be will look after their wounded.
I still stand by my comment last year that we should become associated with the Makeawish foundation.
What about 3 charities one for each Wales/Scotland & England, that way if someone is involved with a particular charity in their area they suggest it and we have three votes for each area of the country. We can then keep to the principle of assisting smaller charities and hopefully make a big impact for them. As regards to routes not fussed as I will be missing this year’s ride but there’s no way will be missing next year’s.
