    Alps Accommodation

OK, how many adventurous types have toured the Alps?
I'm planning a trip with some likeminded AT + BMW/Triumph adventurers to try out the Swiss/Italian roads in July to see how they compare to Wales?

The area were planning to stay is Andermatt (so we can sample the Sustenpass,Furkapass,Oberalppass etc) then moving on to Bormio (trying out the S.Bernardino,Splugenpass,Julierpass along the way then doing the infamous Stelvio pass).

So has anyone stayed in the area and can recommend accommodation in or near these places?

    No.
But the Pointe-Isabelle in Chamonix is good. Sheltered parking at the back, nice rooms, central and good breakfasts (which is rare in France).

    Have a good trip.

Hey thanks for the tip Recycler, not sure of the route were doing to-from Andermatt yet (trip by committee!), if we go via chamonix we could take in the Monte blanc tunnel and do the Grd St bernard as well, so thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Done a lot of riding in the Alps French,Swiss,Austrian and Italian. Being a old git my memory is going so can`t remember names of accommodation but i never planned where i was going to stop, just picked somewhere at days end. Most places will have somewhere to put your bikes if you ask.

Can`t say i enjoyed the tunnels. There are some good roads that go round most tunnels and are usually traffic free, but if you need to get somewhere fast the tunnels are the way to go.

Check out Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps and Corsica by John Hermann ISBN 1-884313-32-9.
This book has plenty of good routes to keep you going back for years to come and also has a list of Hotels.

Thanks Muckybill, funny thing my mate just bought that book and lent it to me (as he's off skiing). As were a group of 7-8 'Alps Virgins' were going to book the two bases were staying at and go on spec at other times! The hotels we've found so far seem to be averaging £60-65 for a twin room which don't seem too bad.
As for the tunnels your right, where possible were going to go over the top! The only thing i'm unsure about is buying a carnette for the motorways ( £18 ), I think we can afford the time to avoid them though.
    Thanks for your help.

Avoid tunnels unless short on time, they have strict speed & vehicle spacing limits and STINK of fumes.

    Re: Alps Accommodation

I have been to the Alps quite a few times - we've often booked a mobile home on a camping site to use as a base. It's considerably cheaper to book direct with the site rather than through a UK operator such as Eurocamp whose cost includes for their couriers etc. A mobile tends to be better & more relaxed than a hotel. The last one we stayed at was Camping Europa near to Lake Annecy. This is the sort of place we got last time:
