    Now step 3?

    Hi.
Step 1; get a spare rear shock. Check (thanx, Sean).

Step 2; strip said shock into its various components and measure up. Check

Step 3; "find" or make/adapt some kind of (remote) preload adjuster to said shock

This is where you lot come in

There's a wealth of experience out there, does/has anyone (or a mate!) owned a bike with some kind of remote pre-load adjuster.

Here I'm thinking VFR750 or the NTV650 (+ Deauville???) which has a remote adjuster, (I'm not sure if the Hawk/Bros also used this system).

Other than that attempting to 'graft' a cam type of adjuster to the bottom of the shock.

The damper body is 50mm (did ya know the springs are tapered!!!) so ideally a hydraulic adjuster with a 48-50 mm bore to fit in place of the locking rings.

If anyone know's of one of thess bikes could you measure the damper body please.

Me thinks I'll be spending a lot of time going round autojumbles with an unhealthy obsession with rusty old shocks, clutching a micrometer

    Cheers, phil

My FJ1200s had a remote 'something' on the rear shock. By turning a dial on the remote adjuster it turned a chain that wrapped completely around the adjuster on the shock.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

No, I actually had two, both early models (3CV). The second was bought to replace my first Africa Twin, but I realised it was a mistake as the AT was better at long distance commuting, so I bought my second AT.

I'll see if I can scan a pic of the chain/shock adjuster from my Haynes manual.

Now theres a thought, that can be my 2007 call sign

Unfortunately, very definately not big, infact it's got to be quite small as Mr H hsan't left me with a lot of space around the top of the shock

The "BIG" comes in when reassembling the unit
