Chance to ride an easy off-road route..

    Here's a question for you..

If the Trail Riders Fellowship was able to provide some off-road routes that are suitable for AT/Transalp/Vara (possibly ) riding, would you seriously consider supporting them through membership?

It's an important question as I think we'd all like to do this and we're all a bit annoyed at the recent news of off-road lane closures, but there's news for you all. Quite a lot of lanes/routes etc.. are available and with their help we can gain access to relevant route information..

What are your thoughts? ...because I'm discussing this with them at the moment..

The question that comes up is what price membership?
This site would certainly be worth paying to be a member of so, with two mugs already, I'm looking forward to being able to support the site more by buying T-shirts and stickers.
Might it be worth asking the TRF if XRV.org.uk members can be some sort of group affiliate?
I can't, at present, see myself wanting to join in many of their other activities, despite the fact that many roads round here are in a worse condition than a lot of green lanes. That means I'm not sure I'd want to pay much for the privilege.

My own view is that the TRF needs to understand that people won't buy a membership from them if they don't see information/a product worth buying.. It's about relevance and if the TRF had relevant information i.e. Routes we could ride safely and legally, without the fuss of technical route classifications etc.. is that something we are interested in..

I know I am as I've taken my AT off-road a few times and it's a facet to the bike that makes you say "Wow, this bike IS really cool.. It does goes anywhere.. Awesome!"

Wel it's a little known fact that I'm the rights of way officer for Essex Group TRF and I have to say that I could easily mark a map up for Essex showing all the routes that would be suitable for an Africa Twin/Transalp, but that it could change at different times of the year and even be out of date after one pass of the farmers tractor on a wet day after a wet winter. As it is I tend to only use lanes on my AT that I've been down on my DR very recently, so as not to have to abandon it till I get help.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Of course, but some routes are generally easier than others..

I for one am interested in taking my @ off the tarmac. The next Salisbury Plain run appeals.

Expanding on that idea if there was a source of info that was usable I'd sign up for it and try and make the most of it cos I had paid for it!

I think that's only for the ladies!

Does anyone have any experience of this http://www.offroadroutes.net/index.asp site?

If its any help, there's lists of some online rights of way maps here.

As suggested above, I guess most routes would need pre-running on a more suitable trail bike or (am I really suggesting this ) mountain bike.

We're lucky here, as hampshire maps are online, and wiltshire trails are usually well signposted and fairly well known.

I've always had TRF membership chalked up as one of those things I might get round to it eventually - but as their rideouts are of limited interest to me, I've never been too bothered about it.
