    MOT's

Hi can anyone enlighten me on the law regarding MOT's. I am considering buying a old bike which is an Italian import. The bike is currently Taxed but has no MOT, it needs some work but will I run into problems with new regulations if the clocks and headlight have not been modified in line with new reg's, it was registered here in the uk in 1992.

As far as I'm aware, it's still OK to put stickers on your headlights to block the part of the beam pattern that would be pointing the wrong way. For some headlights you can get beam benders, which are stick on lenses that divert the beam rather than block it off.

Should be OK with the speedo (I didn't even think a speedo was an MOT requirement anyway ) but if not you can just put little stickers on it to show where the important speeds are in mph...

Oh right - that may well be the case.

The best bet is to call in to the place where you're planning to get the MOT done, and see if you can have a natter with the tester that'll be doing your bike beforehand.

Lots of testers don't know all the rules, and even more choose to ignore some of the more ridiculous ones.

Gotta say it's a daft idea using a right hand dip headlight over here without blocking off the bit that'd dazzle oncoming vehicles - for your own safety as much as others' discomfort - so I can't see them letting that one go.

Can't see why they'd stipulate you having to have an official left-hand-dip light though....

I owned a MOT station in the UK before I moved over here to France. Testers decisions vary considerably. the Ministry say that a decision is split into three categories PASS, FAIL , TESTERS DISCRETION, so basically what one tester deems "excessive" another one might think that it is servicable. Regarding beam patterns, my @ twin (2000 RD07) has a flat beam pattern, which is classed as European beam pattern and thus is NOT a fail. If lights are PERMINATLY disconnected then they are not testable as the vehicle has to be "Tested as presented"
    I hope this makes sense,

    Rick
