GPS waypoints / Route sharing, etc

Having recorded the whole of the rideout I went on yesterday it got me to thinking how I let everyone else see that.

I'm using Memory Map to record my route, and the route is available for anyone with Memory Map to load in and see where we went.

But what about those people that don't have Memory Map?
e.g we have also Garmin routes as well available on the site.

Ideally what I'd like to do is show these routes on Google Map, and allow people to print or download the routes.
I think this could be a very very powerful addition to the site if we can get this cracked.
It shares the knowledge of green lanes about.

So those with knowledge.... what's the best way of going about this.

I'm not quite what the other options are, but I'll have a look into it. I use Fugawi 1:50000 mapping with my Garmin 12XL. I also have some of the Memory Map 1:25000 mapping but have yet to try it with the Garmin.

I would be intested to see if your waypoint data works with Fugawi, if you didn't mind emailing it Dave?

GoogleEarth does have a facility to download GPS data. Easy Peasy. Alternatively you could try downloading GPSUtility(it's free) and export your data into another format.

Does it upload that's what I'm on about.

And if so in what format?

Is there a standard format by which all systems will be able to read the data?

    Sussed it...

Go and get Google Earth here...
    http://earth.google.com/index.html

Then get this file which is a gpx file which different mapping solutions should understand. This is my rideout from Saturday as an example.
    http://www.xrv.org.uk/routes/wales_rideout_220406.gpx
Right click on the link above and select "Save Link As".

Fire up Google Earth and select File Open and point it to the gpx file that's been downloaded. You should then see the route we took.

Next thing I need to get cracked is to get it working in Google Maps so that you can see the actual roads.

Nice one, Dave. Easy, eh? I use it fairly often for my volunteer work. I don't use GoogleMaps much, though, but it wouldn't surprise me if it had a similar functionality.
