    Bent gear change shaft

On my way home from the excellent Dartmoor camping trip, my chain snapped and jammed up round the front sprocket, the spare soft link i had with me, we, thats me and nice man from SOS recovery, couldn't get to fit, even though it came with the chain.
So anyway, bike now in bits doing some odds and sods to her, so thought i'd remove cover from front sprocket and see what had gone on under there.
Immediately noticed shaft for gear change was bent, couldn't get the lever or the cover off as not enough clearance, so with help from me mate big hammer managed to straighten it enough to allow removal of lever and cover, the question is, will this be ok now to be left and used or is it gonna need replacing, which no doubt will be expensive, yours thoughts gentlemen please

    Richard.

    Bent lever

If you've managed to straighten it up with a hammer you're a miracle worker Tricky!

Damn thing just snapped off when I tried it!

Possibly just trying it and watching for an oil leak is the best bet. You probably have but, have you tried changing gear without the engine running just by rocking the bike back and forth and did it work ok?

Have you any idea why it snapped? Did you have a split link in or was a stone, or just bad luck? TA! Shel

    I agree with Shel.
Check to see if it leaks oil (possibly damaged oil seal by the hammer...).

And if it still works, leave it as is.

Guilty as charged, it was split link , as for testing if it works, bike isn't exactly rolling at the mo , will be back together and tested in the morning.

    I have to wonder...

...we all make a virtue of running chains far looser than Honda recommend...

...and we have a staggeringly high rate of chain failures!
flat out on utterly inappropriate tackle
