Some sad news and some happy news

The sad news is that I'm thinking seriously about selling my @.

The happy news is that I'm thinking seriously about buying a Varadero!

It's big and ugly, but the plus is that you can have it converted to the ultra pleasing
    XRV-1000i Desert Storm!

But tell me, how do you get the Vara converted to a Desert Storm? If I do go ahead I'm thinking about keeping the Vara's side panels, but what sort of mods do you have to make to the fairings in order to fit them to the Vara's fuel tank? Also, is the Vara's tail light section the same as on the RD07's? Basically, what's involved in the conversion as seen on the Africa Queens site?

    Good on ya Taz.

I imagine a lot of hard work doing the conversion - mainly because no-one over here has done it - (I dont think).

I did recently send an e-mail to Stephan at African Queens asking if he had any English info he gould give us about the various conversions available, but he has not yet come back to me.

You will have to trawl the AQ website and use Babel Fish to translate german to English, and then from that try and work out what to do?

You could also try the Italian @ owners site - if you can read/speak Italian http://www.africatwinclub.it/

I think from what i understand so far, you use the @ side panels, Front fairing and lights, seat and the rest i guess is a mish mash of @ and Varadero. Have noticed that a lot of the pics i've seen show Marzochi front forks fitted - very cool, but very expensive.

    Good luck

So its basically a Vara internal but @ looks? Suppose its what the new @ should be. wait a few years and you might get something like that, ie the new africa twin!

The big risk is the change over. I don't want to sell my hard to get hold of @ and then find that I can't get hold of a decent Vara.

As for the conversion, the only thing possibly hard there is the fitting of the fairings (especially to the tank) and the nose cone. The Vara side panels I'd keep. Not sure if I'd change the Vara seat yet.

If they do get back to you could you please let me know?

What's "Babel Fish"? And no, I know no other language except good ol' English (both UK, American and Aussie). :P

I thought that the original Vara front forks were used?

Basically yes. With the Vara I'm more interested in the 1000cc fuel injection than anything else. Although, I do like the look of the smaller @ fairings on the large hulk of the Vara. The @ fairings kinda make the bike look more streamlined and gives it the main ingredient that I'm looking for, which is..."attitude". It'd look even better in black with a custom spray job! And yep, that is what the Vara should've looked like if they hadn't employed Stevie Wonder on their design team! :P
