    Garmin and Starcom link cable?

    Hi,

Can someone tell me for sure what the audio jack size is on the Garmin Streetpilot III Delux?

I want to get a link cable to fit to the Starcom system. The manufacturers say they THINK its a CAB 36 but couldn't be sure and I don't seem to be able to get through to Garmin to ask them.

The choice is either a 2.5mm or 3.5mm

    Thanks
    Stewart

you'll get through to Starcom quicker and they are very helpful. A standard audio cable won't do though, I think. It has to be a special cable.

    nope

Spoke to them first and all they could say was 'I think its a cab36' which is a 3.5mm one.

I didn't want to get that one only to find that I REALLY reeded the 2.5mm one.

If normal walkman-type headphone plugs fit the socket, it's 3.5mm.

If they don't fit, it's not...

    I'll check tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it's a 2.5mm mono plug - IIRC it's a teeny-weeny one

As it happens I'm currently looking at the Starcom vs Autocom choice....what made you go for Starcom ?

In a bit of a hurry, so I won't be putting in for the RPS prize on this one, but I dug out the old camera and Streetpilot.....

On the left is a 3.5mm (headphone) plug for comparison, whilst on the right is the Streetpilot car lead with a 2.5mm mono plug.

Looking at the Starcom cables page on ..http://www.tecstar.co.uk/comms/price_list.htm
the CAB-35 lead has a 2.5mm on, so that might do the trick ?

Perhaps you should check this with Starcom ?

I was tossing up between the two and decided to go the starcom way cos of the cost of all the additional leads etc with Autocom.

I went to order mine with www.biketobike.co.uk and said "I'll have the Starcom1 Advanced please".........bugger , there goes another £30. I really meant to order the normal Starcom 1 but my sub-consious toymaster got the better of me.

I'm glad it did now cos when it turned up (next day) I couldn't believe how small it was. I know that Tecstar give you the dimensions on the website but that doesn't prepare you for how small it really is.

At the moment I am well impressed, but I haven't actually used it yet. I'll keep you posted as to what I think of it.

Thanks for the pics.......2.5mm it is then

So it's not just me who does that then!

I can see the attraction of the bog standard 1, as I like the idea of being able to run it on battery power, as well as from bike power. I don't want to install the kit on the bike, and instead will either wear a waist belt with everything in an old diving weightbelt pouch system, or stuff it all into my biking rucksack sidepockets. If I wire everything up correctly I should be able to walk away from the bike and still communicate.

The reason for not installing on the bike is that I'll be parking in station car parks, and if some toerag sees the 7 pin plugs he'll know that there's several hundred quid's worth of toy under the seat

......but then again the Starcom Advance has more inputs and more tweaky controls (eg, a dedicated GPS input instead of having to share with a phone).....oh dear, when I order I suspect I may undergo the Stewybear effect

Yeah, good point - make sure that you get the ISOLATED cable....necessary when both the Starcom and the Garmin are being powered from the bike's 12v supply. Presumably it's to prevent a DC current at the audio input of the Starcom.

    Hmmm, let's see - 1metre of cable, 2 audio plugs, & a blocking capacitor.....costs about £ 2.50...."THAT'LL BE £20 PLEASE SIR", KERRRRCHING !
