    Question on bike theft?

I was wondering. In light of the recent spate of AT thefts, would it be worth the bike owners informing us what anti theft deterrents were on the stolen bike if any, ie , lock and chain, ground anchor, alarm etc. And where it was stolen from, work, home , outside pub, under flood light etc.

And also AT riders to inform us of failed attempted bike thefts, on there current bike and bikes of the past. What prevented the thief from removing the bike?

Then maybe could make our own poll to see what really are effective bike theft deterrents, not some dodgy poll in a mag sponsored by abus or oxford etc.

    whadja think?

Well I can only comment on my past expierence.

    1. 100GS taken out of our back yard in Stratford, gate etc was locked but with something flimsy - the bike was only steering locked so my own fault really. Still thought it was quite cheeky stealing a bike from premises where 17 South-Africans lived.

    2. 1100GS which was really not cosmetically clean or anything to look at. Parked in Drury Lane bike park again only with steering lock as my lock and bag fell off in Brixton somewhere a few days earlier. They just stuck a screwdriver in the lock and drove it off luckilly with hardly any petrol in it. Again not chained so my own fault.

I put a chain through my AT's front wheel which I hope is a better choice as it would put a thief more in the limelight so to speak as he needs to break or pick the lock in the road very visible to everybody. On the rear wheel you can basically just crouch down and pretend you looking at something I would think.

When I lived in Amsterdam, the trick with pushbikes was to place your bike with 3 locks, next to a bike with just 2 locks, so they would pick that one....

I'm coming over to the UK in august... Packing list: A good few locks....

Mine was stolen as I was just nipping in to work for 5 mins, and several hours later was still there.
I hadn't locked the bike, so they hot wired it and rode it off.

I now have an alarm, and a chain that I always pass through the rear wheel.
