speed limit cuts for nearly all country roads

Looks like you'll need to stick to major trunk routes if you want to be able to blat along at a heady 60mph in future

Other A roads are probably going to be reduced to 50mph or 40mph limits...

A 60mph limit would be suitable for "high quality strategic roads with few bends and junctions or accesses". A 50mph limit would be suitable for "lower quality" strategic roads that had a relatively high number of bends, junctions and accesses.

A 40mph limit should be imposed on roads with many bends or junctions, substantial development, or for "strong environment or landscape reasons" or if there were considerable numbers of vulnerable users.
So that's pretty much guaranteed to be a 40 limit on any road you might think is fun to ride

Which means that riding at a currently legal speed will be enough to get you 6 points with the new limits and the forthcoming fixed penalty structure

Of course you may feel that the local Councils can be trusted only to stick 40/50 limits on roads where it's not safe to do more than that

Spin doctors have done a slick job, most news organisations seem to be reporting it as a (reasonable) 30mph limit for all villages.

the South of Ireland has sort of gone that way with the introduction of speed limits in KPH. The only thing is that if you go onto really small roads in the middle of nowhere then the speed is back up to 100kph again!?

Speed limits are starting to get ridiculous in the South of Ireland... The Goverment have just spent millions developing one of the major arteries out and in to Dublin into a 3 lane dual carriage way, namely the N7. They haven't placed any speed cameras yet!!!!

Last night on my way back to Dublin I counted 20 sensors along a 20km stretch of road...sensors that have been placed on the road...just waiting for the cameras to be fitted.... the speed limit along this 3 lane dual carriage way 62mph/100kmph. I suppose they have to pay for the road some way....and Joe Public foots the bill again.

One of the roads near me has been reduced to 50mph and had two cameras installed at a huge cost including painting the road and putting up loads of signs, trouble is they haven't cut the trees back so it's a bit of a give away that there aren't actually cameras installed (they would just take pictures of tree branches).
Joe Public's immediate reaction on seeing them is to slow down to at least 40mph despite the fecking huge signs and road markings saying it's 50mph.
Still makes them easier to overtake especially down that special hatched motorcycles only lane down the middle

icenian is right. This is gonna kill almost any enjoyment of riding public roads. Choice: boring motorways or 40mph? And all it does is reward those prepared to break the law.

Well apparently 70% of the UK population think it's a good thing to have lower speed limits on rural roads.

I wonder if it's the 70% who live in Urban areas and who panic when they find a twisty road?

I cant see how this will be enforced everywhere

Surely they wont be able to put speed cameras up everywhere - and if they do it wont take long for them to be blown up or ripped down by people :flame2: - not that i condone this. I've got no problem with them in built up areas and accident blackspots. its those bloody NIMBYS again / and or government with another stealth tax - tossers

Theres bound to be the odd unmarked camera van here and there - keep your eyes peeled .

I'm not too worried about it - i'll just try and go off road more - where i'm allowed to

Whilst there still are such things, don't forget the new penalty points system that's on it's way (not sure if the Bill has been passed, but nobody seems to be opposing it), where you'll get 6 points for being (AFAIR) 20mph over the limit.

So a currently-legal 60 will become enough to get you banned on the second offence.

Oh, how we'll look back fondly at camera vans, though, when they have GPS-based road "pricing"

Then they'll know exactly where you go, and exactly when, and therefore how fast. So if you stray 0.00001mph over the limit they can give you an instant fine. No need for expensive cameras and operators then...

hmmm, wonder how they'll "road price" green lanes?

Always assuming the GPS black box-thingy doesn't automatically summon a police firearms unit, to gun down the dangerous menace to society that you obviously must be...
